Connecting your XBox to your PC

Hardware needed: Tbase 10/100 Ethernet card
Suitable cable: RJ45 (either straight or crossover)
Software needed: Flash FXP
EvolutionX installed on your XBox

Many of the process you will want to carry out will require you to connect your XBox to your PC. This is a quick guide as to how to do that. If you have problems check out the tutorials section at http://www.xbox-scene.com

There are a number of ways to connect the two pieces of hardware together:

But no matter how you do it they all boil down to one of two ways.  The first is a direct connection between the XBox and your Computer as shown above, on the left.  The other is through a hub or a router (or if you are like me an ADSL Modem/Hub/Router combined - like the Netgear DG814 or the D-link DSL-504)

Direct Connection

You need a Tbase 10/100 Ethernet card also known as a NIC (Network Interface Card) in your PC (if you do not have one already they aren't expensive to buy - check your local retailer). You will also need a cable, more specifically you need an RJ45 crossover cable. (RJ45 is the type of plug on each end and crossover specifies the way the cable is wired between the two plugs). Next you'll need to transfer files to the XBox (FTP). This requires an FTP program. The recommended FTP Client for use with the XBox is FlashFXP. This is where it gets tricky. The EvolutionX dashboard will show the IP details of the XBox, the IP address and subnet (e.g. IP 192.168.0.2 and subnet 255.255.255.0). Enter these details in the connect box of FlashFXP and hopefully it should connect. If not, again, check www.xbox-scene.com for more detailed tutorials.  In this particular configuration it may be that you only need one NIC if your Modem connects via a USB cable.

Through a Router/Hub

In this case your Xbox wont connect into the back of your PC but into a hub which is connected to your PC. As I have said, in my case my hub/router is also an ADSL modem. Here you need to use a straight cable (because of the router) NOT a crossover cable . The rest of the process is the same as above once the XBox is connected to the Hub.

The next page shows how you go about making your own CAT5 network cable, either straight or crossover.

Using FlashFXP and EvolutionX

If you start up EvolutionX and go to the Settings menu you will be presented with the following:

The important thing to note is the IP address

Now go to FlashFXP which has a front end that looks like the screenshot below:

Select Site Manager from the Sites Menu:

Then you are faced by the following:

This is the box in which you enter the IP address details of your XBox.

Note that EvolutionX automatically sets up the User Name as xbox and the password as xbox.  These can be changed, if you wish, by editing the EvoutionX configuration settings.
