Software For Your XBox

Obviously the mod chip, once installed, will allow you to play backups of games on CD-RW or DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW. However one of the more exciting features of the mod chip is that it allows you to run software not authorised by M$ to run on the XBox. This software opens up a whole now dimension to the big black box!

EvolutionX a.k.a. EvoX

This is probably the most talked about and one of the more complicated pieces of software on the XBox. Essentially it replaces the M$ XBox dashboard with its own dashboard. This dashboard has a lot more functionality. The main thing it allows you to do is connect your XBox to your computer via FTP so that you can transfer files back and forth and edit files on your XBox HDD. EvoX also allows you to replace the internal HDD of the XBox with a bigger one if you want to. It has a built in menu system that you can add to that allows you to install programs on the XBox HDD and run them with being connected to your computer. All in all it really is essential to install if you want to get the most out of the XBox. Its complexities are too varied to go into in depth here however if you check out the tutorials section of http://www.xbox-scene.com you will find many different guides on installing, setting up and running EvoX

Media Player

Again one of the more essential pieces of XBox Software. This handy program allows you to play practically ANY media file you wish to throw at it (DivX, XviD, SVCD, VCD, WMA, MP3 etc). The easiest way to run this it to install it to the HDD and run it from there. The media (i.e. the films, music, etc.) can be stored on the HDD, a CD-RW/DVD-R etc. or it can be streamed from your computer directly to the XBox over an Ethernet connection. The latest version of Media Player (Version 2) comes with a comprehensive PDF manual to help you install and get it running although once again http://xbox-scene.com has many tutorials to help if you get stuck.

XBConnect

From the XBConnect Website:

"XBConnect is "Next Generation" Software for Win32 that allows you to play Microsoft XBox System link games over the internet. No more Single Player Campaign/Career modes. With XBConnect finding players to play against is a breeze and an essential part of the XBox experience.

Supported games to date are Halo, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2x, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 , NASCAR Heat 2002, Moto GP, TimeSplitters 2, DeathRow, Tony Hawk 4, NFL Fever 2003, Ghost Recon, MechAssault, Serious Sam, Whacked, and Unreal Championship

This software fools your system link games into believing that you are playing on a Local Area Network, allowing you to hook up with friends and rivals from all over the world."

That says it all really :-). Its kind of like an unofficial XBox Live!

Other useful pieces of software that run on your XBox

boXplorer allows you to navigate around the XBox's HDD and DVD-Rom just like Windows Explorer allows you to navigate around your computers drives. It also allows you to launch programs and *.WMA files that are on the HDD.

XboxCopy allows you to easily copy the data on Xbox DVDs directly to the Xbox HDD (before XBcopy you had to copy the data to your pc HDD first).

Now before you start that e-mail to tell I missed loads of programs out I know! OK. All I have put here are the ones I consider to be essential and I have not included any of the numerous emulators that are available. Again I point you back in the direction of http://www.xbox-scene.com which has a comprehensive list of programs that are available on the XBox.
