YOU
You are
sunrise and sunset
all the colors of a rainbow
and you are more.
You are
the light in my eyes
the smile that shapes my days
the joy of my heart.
You are
God's most precious gift
a part of me
my reflection
my child.

POTENTIAL
What is a child, but reflection
of love?
Incarnation of hopes and desires
The dreams of man and his legacy
To carry on as our ego requires
But is that all there is to see
A way to carry on?
Or is the innocent child
Like the sun before the dawn
Full of bright potential
To succeed upon his own
Bring light to someone's world
And warmth to someone alone
Fate shall guide his steps
Time will determine his way
And just like the sun, he'll
shine
Each and every day

...THIS MANY...
Look at him standing there
his world filled with joy
all he needs to worry about
is where to find his favorite
toy.
...my Mommy puts the toothpaste
on...
...she says that I'm too little...
...but I can climb up here all
by myself...
...'cause I'm almost..... this
many...
I wish the world was in better
shape
and a better place in which
to live
by the time his children have
children
there will be nothing left to
give.
...Pretty soon I'll be as big
as Daddy...
...then nobody will have to
help me...
... gett'n bigger and stronger...
...'cause I'm almost..... this
many...
Adorable as he brushes his teeth
he's getting quite big already
won't be long before he's all
grown up
preparing to meet his steady.
...why does Mommy keep look'n
at me?...
...I'm big enough not to fall...
...not making a mess either...
... 'cause I'm almost..... this
many...
Watching his independence grow
continuing each day to amaze
me
I know he can do it all by himself
after all, he's almost... this
many.

"SOMEDAY"
Someday I'll fly a rocket
to the moon,
Or sail a clipper ship and search
for pirate gold.
Someday I'll be a
vet-a-narium,
And cure a hippy-pottum-us's
cold.
Someday I'll own a
billion, zillion cows,
And ride my pretty pony
ever day.
Someday I'll be big enough
to go out by myself,
Anytime I want
to play.
Someday I'll drive
a red fire engine truck,
Or be a circus clown,
Or own a zoo.
But today I gotta take a bath,
And brush my teeth,
'Cause that's what Mommy
Said I gotta do.

LESSONS LEARNED
Daddy watches from out in the
hall
Hoping and praying he doesn't
fall
He tries on his own to stand
up high
It's hard for dad to let him
try
The mirror reflects an innocent
child
Hoping and praying he doesn't
turn wild
Dad hopes and prays he learned
lessons taught
And always remembers what's
right.... what's not
But if he falls bruises will
heel
The pain is not what dad will
feel
Dad will ponder in hind-sight
Did he raise.. this child right
Standing tall on a little stool
This child's Mother raised no
fool
Not just at bedtime when he'd
brush his teeth
But every single day of the
week
Now shaving in the mirror standing
tall
Can he appreciate Dad gave his
all?
Does he know Dad tried his best?
Or does he think he failed the
test?

BRUSHING YOUR TEETH
use a soft bristled brush.
synthetic bristles are best
natural bristles can harbor
bacteria
as most dentists will attest
be sure it's the right size
smaller is better
place the bristles at 45 degrees
slide the brush under your gums,
that's where
jiggle the bristles, and the
plaque will be removed
be sure to brush the outside,
the tongue side, that's ADA
approved
for the front teeth
brush the inside surface
of your upper and lower jaws
by tilting the brush emplace
use up and down strokes
over the gums and teeth
brush your tongue
to freshen your breath, ET
To prevent plaque damage
brush at least once every day
preferably at bedtime
brush after breakfast too by
the way
brushing should take 3 minutes.
brushing the teeth too vigorously
using a hard bristled toothbrush
causes gums to recede unsafely
a small amount of toothpaste
is all you need
replace your brush
when the bristles spread

JUST A GLIMPSE
Today I caught a glimpse of a
little boy
doing the simplest of tasks
Reveling in his grown up ways
"I brushed my own teeth today"
"See!!"
Wide toothy grin had he
so proud
His mother waved him on
dismissed
Too busy with the chores of
the day
so sad
No time to take note of this
small child's
victory
The simplest of tasks a bore
to some
a joy to another's heart
If I could turn back the hands
of time
and maybe
Just maybe were it in my power
you survived
I knew in my heart you would
be
my Son
Today you would be a man
all grown up
I never got to hold you or scold
you
but oh, how I loved you
Today I caught a glimpse of
a little boy
and wondered

VISION
These eyes that stare back at
me
Give a hint of what could be
To love my family all I can
Exciting flight to Mars when
a man.
Right now I am only small
Someday like dad will be tall
Now time to brush my teeth as
mom said
Say my prayers and hop into
bed.

THE MOM I LOVE
A snapshot in my mother's mind
her child I'll always be.
Cherished, beloved, so adored
her little boy is me.
You can see it in her eyes
and everything she does;
how much she dotes and cares.
Simple expressions of her love.
She still smiles,
after all these years;
catching sight of me
brushing my teeth.
Perhaps she sees that memory,
her little man is me.
A snapshot in my mother's mind
her child I'll always be.

A CHILD
A child will bring you joy
Sometimes a bit of fear
Sits and plays with a toy
In your heart they are dear
Tousled hair upon their head
Smudges of dirt on a hand
Softly you smile at what is
said
Watching them from where you
stand
Looks at each as they grow
Learns each day something new
Seeing their faces all aglow
Eyes that sparkles like the
morning dew
Happiness brought to your heart
Glad to have them in your life
This you knew from the start
No matter what, are worth the
strife

DAYDREAMS TO THE
INNOCENT MIND
A PANTOUM
Come again, oh wondering thoughts
of youth;
daydreams to this innocent mind
in places felt and viewed as
truth.
His future dances in the waves
of time.
Daydreams to this innocent mind,
what challenges lay ahead?
His future dances in the waves
of time...
What disasters will he dread?
What challenges lay ahead?
These dreams he may fulfill.
What disasters will he dread
of nightmare demons he will
kill?
These dreams he may fulfill,
in places felt and viewed as
truth
of nightmare demons he will
kill.
Come again, oh wondering thoughts
of youth.

RUSSELL
Russell was a good boy
At two he learned to brush his
teeth
He was so proud
I remember as if it were yesterday
Russell was a good boy
At six he was in school
His sisters watched him along
the way
Was it really thirty-two years
ago?
Russell was a good boy
He learned to climb trees
I shuddered as I watched him
I prayed he wouldn't fall
Russell was a good boy
He really played the role
He wanted his family to wait
on him
But we made him walk
Russell was a good boy
He found someone to love
He took her in to his protection
And she gave him a son
Russell was a good son
While Cathy was so mean
She seem to like hurting him
To which he had no defense
Russell, my child, my only son
In June would have been thirty-eight
Yet do I visit him often
Wishing he could have stayed.

OF GUIDANCE AN ACT OF GUIDANCE
O guide
and guide me well,
fore I was told
to ne'er tell.
Told to ne'er seek
to find the truth,
amongst the meek-
the keys to youth?
What is to knowest
of the uncertain kind...
too young or naive
a childish mind?!!
The dimmest of lights
cannot hold thy hand,
to cleanse thy mouth
from bitter plans.
It is of forcefulness
to act in guidance...
to accustom a way
through childlike abidance.
And despite thy mannerisms
fall to fade;
can thy cup
be e'er raised...
to wear such a mask
of fruitless abandon,
and to cherish
all kinds
forever in heaven?
O guide
and guide thee well,
fore time cannot shrink
thine eyes so swell;
for if wonder
is to keenly guise...
then pity
all the fools
who see too blind!

And what he has found,
Reflections of Innocence,
Face of a sweet child,
Thinking of mud puddles,
Or dragons and adventure.

SLEEPY TIME
Dusk is closing in, t'is time
for children everywhere
To come inside, take a bath,
comb unruly hair.
Pajamas on, teeth get brushed,
tucked tightly into bed,
Listen closely, little ones,
a story will be read.
A legend to develop young imagination,
Concerning far off worlds, or
starry constellations.
A cowboy on a horse or a pilot
on a ship,
A princess in a castle, a gypsy
on a trip.
You might go to places you have
never been before,
Catch a fair unicorn or find
a magic drawer.
Anything is possible with imagination,
Go, sweet child, make the world
your very own creation.

TOOTH GLOW
The child in the picture we see
Not much older than two or three
Stands toothbrush in hand
But to him a magic Wand
Which he waves in the air
As he begins to stare
Into the mirror so tall
Fix high on the bathroom wall...
As his story begins to unfold
He imagines himself a Warrior
Bold
On horseback he rides
Faithful hounds by his sides
Into battle once more
Hidden behind the bathroom door
Lurks DARE HE SAY?
The Dark Knight...the Evil DK...!
Brandishing his Magic Brush so
He soon has each tooth all aglow
Now that they are clean
He has the right to proclaim
V I C T O R Y !
But what a price
For eating sweets
After tea...!

BOY IN THE MIRROR
Who is this boy in the mirror?
I see him every day
His mother must be just like
mine
She makes him brush his teeth.
I wonder
Does he have the same fears
as I?
Do monsters live under his bed
and
Fly around at night.
Does he have a little red fire
truck?
With a bell to ring
Putting out carpet fires
With long black hoses.
Does he have a teddy bear?
To comfort him at night
With a little black bandana
Wrapped around his neck.
Does his mommy and daddy love
him?
Shoo away his fears and
Kiss his little knee
When damage appears.

REFLECTIONS OF YOUTH
His eyes
Filled with innocent dreams
Through which we try to see
the future
His future
And good fortune we hope will
last
See the future we never had
Wishing his is always better
Than our own past...
Hoping, always hoping
That our guiding hand stays
true
Coaching him, leading him,
With what we say and do...
But letting him learn the meaning
Of one's own righteous way
Feeling everything with him
From selfish "but, but's"
To the rights and wrongs of
every day...
We feel his smiles warming our
heart
Feel the tears we wiped away
Which hurt us more
Than all his little bruises,
little cuts,
Or bad things the others say...
Thinking, always wondering,
About the troubled times ahead
Times when malicious forces
reign
Can we safeguard?
Always?
To deprive a future never void
with pain?
Oh, how fast time has flown
Will keep flying away
All our troubled visions
The wonder of pride and joys
And worries of little boys
Everything!
All that surrounds his young
life...
As we wonder and watch our child
grow
Into the years of adulthood
We follow his future
Along the way
Did we do all the right things?
Maybe!
But always seeing the child
Within his past...
Always seeing our baby.

RARE MEMORIES
Have ran too far to get back
home
wife and kid, plaintive household
Aphrodite sent me pictures of
my boy
tears ran right on my face
my heart was beating, so complained
I asked God to help me
make it through
Hope has left me, alone in a
room
the walls are high, its all
doleful
I'm a man in exile and that's
for sure
3 thousand mile wide
holding pictures and rare memories
there's such an emptiness
don't know if I'm alive
as the time runs and still I'm
stuck
doddering, in a frozen glass
I realize
I live but I'm not worth it

UNTITLED
it's the same routine most every
night,
those things i do
before turning out the light.
comb my hair, wash my face
brush my teeth, so pearly white.
lost in reverie, i often find
upon looking up
an image of a different kind.
one, from what seems so long
ago,
captured and reflected
in the mirrors of my mind.
innocence staring back at me.
a smile, across my face,
at the child i used to be.
play filled days and dream filled
nights
making mine a joyous life.
every night the same routine
. . .
bringing back sweet memories.

REFLECTION OF LOVE
His dark sparkling eyes
His pug little nose
His red straggly hair
Wildly it grows
His plump little cheeks
His chubby soft hands
Here is the reflection
Of a developing man
Short in his stature
He climbs to be tall
Dear God as I watch
Don't let my little man fall
Give me the knowledge
To guide him each day
And make him the best man
In your own special way.

HERO OF THE PLAQUE
As daybreak awakes this child
sees light,
Such dreams it seems can start
his day right.
In jammies while dancing he
skips to the door,
To the bathroom its time to
brush his front four.
Now Mommie said sonny you must
do hygiene,
Your teeth must be clean for
others to see.
In time you will find your teeth
will then last,
So smile little child for Mommie
knows best.
Anxious he prances upon the foot
stool,
So short being four he thinks
it is kool.
While standing Hess grabbing
a loopy towel rack,
Now steady Hess ready to start
his attack.
With toothbrush he must apply
the blue past,
Then ready but steady time is
at waste.
With right hand he lands the
bristols upon,
his front teeth are pleased
with brushing sounds.....
Steady Hess ready to stroke the
young gums,
So soothing while removing any
plaque that is found.
With hair that is fair of a
lightish red tint,
So young to be fun this young
boys content.
In the mirror he can see there
his purely white teeth.
He smiles all the while pleased
that there clean.
Standing at attention so proud
of his task,
I'm a hero of the plaque war
my whities will last.

MY SON
I look at you all grown up
And fondly remember the days
You'd take the time to pose
As I followed you with my camera
You were such a ham back then
Big smile across your face
Mom, watch this..
Every moment forever captured
I hardly noticed the time go
by
But the change was in the air
My little boy was growing up
You didn't want to pose anymore
Hiding behind the furniture
I sometimes got a shot
Mom, not again..
As you hid your face and ran
You're taller than me now
You're becoming quite a man
My cameras dusty on a shelf
But I keep film close at hand
I'm waiting for you to have
little ones
Their big smiles to fill my
lens
Grandma, watch this..
I'm so proud of you my son

PINNOCHIO
Glass eyes...
are immune to emotion,
no tears are shed...
to rot the wooden face.
Melancholy smiles,
do not grace such lips...
wanting only,
to be kissed.
Flexible limbs...
do not break,
when twisted...
the wrong way.
When I was younger,
I never understood...
why Pinnochio,
wanted to be real...
he'd be giving up...
the ability not to feel,
to hurt,
to see...
the painful truths,
of life.
I would have gladly...
transposed myself,
into that land...
to see through eyes of glass,
and have wooden limbs...
that could painlessly break.
What I never understood...
I'm not sure if I do even now.
I grasp ahold of my heart,
knowing the pain...
that fills it so...
beginning to wonder,
if glass eyes...
are hiding something more.
Something other than the tears
that seemingly do not fall,
something alive...
beating...
the only part of us,
that makes us real.
I think...
I know,
why.

MR. SATURDAY NIGHT
He's a ladies man and everyone
knows it
And his every move cant help
but show it
A wiggle and a waddle and they
flock around
A giggle or a gurgle and he
blows them down
He takes the time to make himself
look right
Cause it is Saturday and that's
ladies night
Manly dressed in a sweat shirt
and overalls
Will have the ladies lining
up along the walls
Pampered and powdered he brushes
the pearly whites
So that his smile isn't just
bright, it ignites
A shine on his shoes and comb
through his hair
The mirror tells him the ladies
don't have a prayer
Stepping out everyone knows he
is Mr. Saturday night
With his chubby cheeks and baby
steps a delight
Its nothing new to him he has
seen this all before
This is the night his mom and
he go to the grocery store

A LITTLE BOY'S THOUGHTS
Standing there in front of the
mirror
Brushing his teeth but his mind's
not here
It's far away in some other
land
Doesn't even feel the brush
in his hand
Thoughts of treasures and adventures
afar
His imagination runs free, there
is no bar
Dreams filled with fantasy and
fun filled days
As the sun moves away the last
of its rays
He has to be called away from
the mirror
To bring his mind back to reality
here
He trudges off to bed, mind
slipping away
As he stumbles into dreams,
his night time play

YOUNGER YEARS
As a child, I was brave and small
Standing on a stool to reach
the sink
Because I wasn't very tall
Brush your teeth! My Dad preached
Cleanliness is next to Godliness
All these things he did teach
Looking in the mirror I could
see
While making funny faces
My Dad was standing behind me
Never forgetting the smile on
his face
And the sparkles in his eyes
He made our home the happiest
place
As time has passed I have grown
Treasuring the things I learned
Holding dear the love I was
shown

TOMORROW
Tomorrow when I grow up, you
see
I'll marry and plant a maple
tree
Since my daddy left, she provides
for me.
And tomorrow when I grow up,
you see
I'll get her a house and a car
I'll pay all her bills and even
mend her broken heart
I'll be good and I'll be brave
Since my daddy has left us,
she only got me.
Tomorrow when I grow up, you
see
I'll go to college and study
and get a job
I want my mommy here at home
Since my daddy left us a stranger
is looking after me.
Tomorrow when I grow up, you
see
It's my birthday and I'll be
3.

LIKE GRANNY HAD
Mom says I need to brush my teeth
To keep them healthy and strong.
Daddy showed me how to do it,
So I pray I don't brush them
wrong.
My big sister, Megan,
Says I make a mess.
But I am only four years old,
And I do, I must confess.
But I want to have clean breath
and nice teeth,
Just like my daddy's has.
So I don't smell like the man,
Who works and pumps gas.
I put the brush on my teeth,
And move it back and forth.
I brush and brush them clean,
For all that I am worth.
The tooth paste tastes funny,
But actually not so bad.
Well at least I will have nice
teeth,
Not fake ones like granny had.
