The history of the Poetry Circle

My friend layla asked me to write poems about some works of art she had on her site. It worked out very well, in fact Linda2001, Ombre and I even wrote one poem together. Linda2001, Ombre, Rustler and myself challenged each other to write a poem about a picture of "a pair of old yellow sneakers". It was so much fun we went on to write about 4 or 5 other pictures. It was decided that we needed a gathering place and so it was that the Poetry Circle reading room was born. On July/24/1998 the first week of poems were posted. The intent of the circle was to be both a place to help people learn how to write or sharpen their poetry skills. As well as a place to meet others and learn more about each other. The Circle is set up like a workshop, a topic or picture is picked by a member and everyone writes a poem about it. The poems are emailed and posted, then on the appropriate Friday night everyone gathers using Excites VPLaces chat program to talk about them. Also be sure to take the time and check out my art links page and watch it grow.
The First Poetry Circle's Archives

The first Poetry Circle had weekly writing challenges but grew to the point where I could not keep up with it by myself. With over 90 members from 32 different countries my lack of technical knowledge brought about the the close of the first Poetry Circle. Here I offer the life's blood of the first Poetry Circle in way of archives, the poems of the many talented poets whom I had the honor of knowing. If you have a poem that was missed, left out or wish to ask a question please email it to me at bear1mage@hotmail.com

Poets Place
After the first circle closed some of its members splintered off to form their own poetry pages. One successful page started by Linda2001 and Peter Jones is called Poets Place. It is set up on a similar format with weekly writing challenges with its group meetings on Saturday's. It continues to be a great place to test ones writing skills with other friendly and talented poets from the four corner of the globe. Be sure to give their site a look and check out their archives so as to appreciate the mastery of their poetic talents.

The Second Poetry Circle's Archives
For the next step in evolution it was to run like a community, a self governing group learning and teaching from within. People volunteered to make up the staff to would maintain and run all the many jobs that make up the Poetry Circle. Also having learned from my mistakes with the first Circle the writing challenges were made bi-weekly. This not only gave the staff more time to edit and post the members poems, it gave members more time on each poem. This Circle grew to 87 members and its down fall was due to personal conflicts of many members within the Circle. Here I offer the archives from the second Poetry Circle but due to an act of internet terrorism two weeks were lost forever. Special thanks to Shadow Whysper who was fortunate enough to still have had many of the pages on her hard drive after editing.
