IN ALL THAT WE SEE

Mother nature standing in all of her glory
We know too well of her beautiful untold story.

With all of her protecting awesome grace
She gently puts everything into its place.

She receives her commands from high above
Some of us see her beauty with all of her love.

With all the devastation and destruction as of late
She stands tall and has the power to regulate.

When things go wrong, we dare not ask why
As we know she keeps things in balance for you and I.

SENTINEL OF LIFE

She came to me that morning
clinging to the edge.
Translucent beauty,
Sentinel of life.

As her presence overwhelmed me,
spirits merging, kindred souls.
I glimpsed a life, a memory,
shared moments in our past.

And as scenes of yesterday
flashed between two wandering souls.
The beauty of a lifetime,
vistas opened in my mind.

Gentle smiles, sparkling laughter,
loving hearts, healing hands.
I suddenly remembered
what despair had covered up.

That the child in the woman
filled with wonder and spellbound,
had waited all these many months
for Hope to bring her home.

MEDICINE WHEEL

Below this azure sky upon these plains and hills we roam,
The old ones say this life is the only one we have known,
Listen Brothers proudly we carry this blood our ancestors gave,
Whether Chieftain, Medicine Man, or merely Lakota Brave.

Our seasons of this life are those of the medicine wheel,
Balance beginning in the east as the rising gold sun reveals,
On this land in which we dwell without walls or doors,
Shedding light on this world as the golden eagle soars.

From the south comes our summer and all things green,
Grows the plentiful time when life is easy we dream,
Little ones' singing, laughter, and play echo round,
All our peoples' hearts and spirits lifted by the sound.

To the west in which the sun sinks to the black of night,
Horizon boldly painted in red, orange, and yellow light,
Like the Bear this time spent to look within each soul,
Each was granting peace to the spirits regardless of role.

Completing the wheel, down from north winter descends,
Time of dormancy and renewal to earth made amends,
Wisdom of the prairie buffalo and woodland wolf reflects,
These truths are revealed by the wheel in all respects.

We people the Lakota Sioux, the world like the eagle see,
The earth is our mother and gladly shall always be,
The sky is our father, who holds the moon and the sun,
This land is our home where the healing waters run.

THE CURSE

Mystic Mermaid, there you stand;
Your beauty shines serene.
The light that emanates from you
Is very plainly seen.

But you are cursed by fickle fate:
Trapped between these rocks.
Your beloved sea beyond your grasp,
In your prison without locks.

Miles away from the realm
Of any civilization.
Your only comfort a waterfall
 And below you vegetation.

Bedeviled by some ancient curse:
Doomed to be alone.
The creatures there that you have loved,
With your touch have turned to stone.

Oh lonely maid, my heart it aches
When I see your awful plight.
Entombed there for eternity:
It's such a tragic sight.

But wait - I hear a horses neigh
And the purring of a cat.
The rocks have split asunder:
You are no longer trapped.

I can hear the roar of water
As the sea rushes to shore.
Your beauteous body moistened
As the water splashes o'er.

At last, you're swimming seaward:
Shackled nevermore.
All your years of torment
Lie shattered on the shore.

What anguished times you must have had:
It's hard to picture worse.
Happily now behind you,
With the lifting of the curse.

THEY WAIT

Wovoka told them if they danced
Their Black Hills would be returned.
Wi-ca-hca-la kin he-ya
Pe lo ma-ka kin le-ce-la
Te-han yun-ke-lo e-ha
Pe-lo e-han-ke-con wi-ca-ya-ka pe-lo
(The old men say the earth only endures
You spoke truly you are right.)

Their spirits guard this canyon
Where once each roamed free.
Native ancestors protecting what was once theirs
As their birthright.

Long before the white man
Long before the railroad,
Or Lewis and Clark.
Long before expansion westward,
Or John Sutter's mine.

Set foot here and feel their presence.
Listen to them speak to your soul.
They will tell you Crazy Horse is buried here
His spirit too protects this sacred ground.

Spirits of all nations gather here:
Chief Joseph, Geronimo, Cochise, Big Foot, Sitting Bull,
Red Cloud, Sacagawea and others.
And they wait.

This is the dwelling place of
The spirits of the wolf and the wild horses
Of the great eagle and the hawk.
Each facing extinction,
Each still yearning to be free.

The ghost dance did not bring back their lands.
So if you enter this hallowed place go quietly
This canyon stands as a memorial to what once was.
And while our legislators debate and our courts decide
They wait.

WRITER'S BLOCK

Trying to write a simple rhyme
Overwhelmed by the artist's touch
Struggling from beginning to end
The revelation way too much

I saw her standing there
Princess of past times
Holding secrets in her heart
Different worlds entwine

Between two canyon walls
Loves river starts to flow
Mixtures of red and white
The waves began to show

This pale skin man loved her
The red skin greets his touch
With blessings from the chief
Desired by them so much

We are linked together
Chief told the pale skinned man
For from the earth we came
Spirits return again

Take with you the princess
Make her your wife today
Cherish and protect her
Give strength along the way

She is a living proof
That blood lines grow like trees
Love is not red or white
But stands with given breeze

Together they lived on
To birth a son of two
His color shaded them
Linking to me and you

Apologies to the artist
My visual soul searched for more
This is only the beginning
Your work made my viewing  heart soar

THE GODDESS

Gently falling water
Filled with power and grace
Moving over the rocks
Down the mountain face

The earth is her home
Giving love and guidance to all
She shapes the world around us
Standing proud and tall

Her beauty we adore
Each valley that we see
From the highest peak
To the warm life giving sea

Holding so lovingly
She brings us our home
Letting us know
That we are not alone

There are fields of grain
And mighty forests
Wetlands and deserts
All provided for us

Gracious loving Goddess
We thank you so
For the home that you give us
The love that you show

SOULS CANYON

she guards the canyon with her life
many spirits dwell here
and she is kind to them all
the dove is her favorite
and as she releases it
its sweet peace flows and falls over all
as a guardian angel
she once walked the paths
and smelled the many flowers
she ran with the  horses
and bathed in the waterfall.
life was simple then
it was pure  and clean
life had no boundaries
and now nothing enters
nothing leaves
for until the dawn of the rebirth
and all evil is crushed
she will guard the
garden of eden
and count the sunsets
hoping tomorrow  is the day!!!

WHAT I SEE

So many things are here to see
What's it mean to you, to me
Under the tree a mule deer grazing
This picture is... truly amazing

The images upon their rocky perch
Down in the valley, a lonely church
A horse's head on the ledge at left
Lone dove nestled to the maidens breast

Images in the rock... oh, so deep
Indian maiden appears to weep
Sees the wolf as a symbolic demon
Throughout the canyon the wind is screaming

White mans' horses are beasts of labor
Indians received.... no special favors
In clouds above, fly away her dove
Taking with it... her earthen love

Love of land from which she is born and bred
Being wasted and squandered, she sees red
Images embedded in the rocks so deep
Tears form waterfalls... as she weeps

Tears to the ocean they slowly flow
Continuing the vicious circle they go
Downward flowing to the sea
This is what it "says" to me

THE FACE OF MAN

The face of man
Mysteriously carved
Into mountains of wood
Holding a dangerous gaze
He seems to look forward
In amazement
At the beautiful creature
That stands before him
Knowing she is protected
By the soldiers
Residents of this mountain
Taking on the form
Of horses and wolves
Carved in the same wood as he
But with a different purpose

Astonishing beauty
Drowns out the light
Of the fading sun
While the roads in the distance
Are traveled heavily
Only in that of another's mind
New life wraps itself in disguise
Around the patches
Where she has cast her love
Upon those soldiers
Who watch out for her
While the man's face
Remains isolated
With only shameful eyes
To share in his desire
To take this fair maiden
That is untouchable

Forever captured
In his own isolation
Carved in the wood
Of a mountain
He stares downward
Upon a miraculous place
And looks ahead
At this beauty
Knowing all the while
That the greatest torture
Is being forced to see
What it is
You can not have
He remains a prisoner
Of his feeble wants
His desires
While her soul
Is able to be free

PRAYER

Great Spirit, please guide my steps...
my pathway is not always clear.
Though I may stumble and fall
I know that You always are near.

Please help me to always be kind;
to no living soul bring pain.
Teach me the ways I should follow,
for my stay on this earthly plain.

SPIRIT WALKER

In a time when Red Cloud walked,
High and proud in a native land,
Wind in hair, a weathered face talked.

Of visions told in the earliest time,
Generations told, always the same,
Of a return of a time always to shine.

Spoke of a time when a land lost,
Of men in time, walking as ghosts,
Unable to connect when needed most.

Speaks a time when bears stand tall,
The wolf again in forests sing proud,
Where buffalo roam, a mighty wall.

See a future when Mustang run wild,
Across the land like wisp of wind,
When the earth again appears as a child.

Hears from the beginning, the earth weeping,
Impaled on man's sword of despair,
Yet Spirit Eagle soars, souls worth keeping.

Envisioned the time, the Spirit walker near,
To awaken the waiting, their stoney silence,
And again to woods and plain to appear.

Tears pour forth, life great urn,
Trickles down from mountains high,
Into river hope---valley of return.

SPIRIT MOUNTAIN

Visions seen on ancient cliffs
Engraved by natures breeze
Speak for all the spirits gone
Live on for all to see

Indian maiden, walk with me
Listen to the ghosts that speak
Wisdom echoing in the canyon
From wisemen, warriors and chiefs

Medicine man, heal my heart
And apply a poultice of herbals
A soothing salve to mend the scars
Left from a war torn nation

Spirits of nature, speak to me
Hear the wolves and coyotes cry
Hungry, starved and left to die
Lost to a future nation

Fallen braves wounded in spirit
Images of warriors lost
Anguish etched onto their faces
Deathmasks haunt ... hallowed ground

A riderless horse stands wait
For the return of a fallen hero
Approaching death takes winged flight
As the wiseman dreams of the owl

Keeper of the "buffalo stones"
Calling the herds to the hunt
Buffalo spirit.. rise up once more
May my child so named, be strong

Indian Maiden sing to me
Of yesterdays gone by
A womb once fertile, silenced
So too... the old ways of life

Great Spirit mourn this nation
Once proud, once strong, once many
Taking flight upon the eagles wings
Kissed, by the Indian Maiden

WAKANTANKA'S TEARS

Sadly she surveys the terrain remembering a time long ago.
The earth was young then, untouched by the wounds of man.
The eagle, now existing only in clouds,
was the watcher of the world.
The mighty grizzly, king of the land, nears extinction.
The solitary howl of a lone wolf has replaced
the joyful cry of the pack.
The buffalo that once covered the plains
like a vast blanket are gone forever.
That great cat, the mountain lion,
has disappeared into the highest reaches of the peaks.
The mustang, still plentiful, no longer a valued companion-
is now pursued for slaughter.

What of man? The strongest, yet most fragile of her children.
What has happened to these, the ones she created to lead?
Casting her eyes across the land she watches her people.
With deep despair, she sees
the disrespect of the land and its’ inhabitants.
Rusted vehicles outside tarpaper shacks, trash dancing on the wind,
scrawny dogs seeking a meal wherever they can.. and her children..
oh her children... where are the once proud people?

Those that danced and sang by firelight in homage to her,
brave warriors that cherished their children
and respected their elders.
No longer do her children honor the land
or call their mother for guidance.
The elders have been abandoned to the state homes,
cared for by strangers.
They mutter in their sleep,
Wakantanka.. her name on their lips dreaming of days long passed.
Wa’ste cala tun.. I am here she replies,
but they are beyond hearing her voice.
The children are gone, scattered to the four winds,
heritage lost in their haste to leave the reservation.
Those that are left behind cloud their minds with drink,
desolate at their losses.
They still sing, but only for the tourist dollar,
forgetting the songs purpose and meaning.
Wa may an kayo.. Look at me, she cries.
Having strayed so far from the true path,
these, her children, are deaf to her pleas.
Tears running down her cheeks,
she releases a dove to bring peace to their spirits.
a soft whisper.. Wa’ste lanke niye... I love you
and the earth mother, the creator fades away.

LINGER

Lingering, among the wonders of time.
 Wishing you were near.
 Looking for that special place
 That opened hearts do appear
 Breathing, life's opened air.
 If only I didn't care.
 Society has made it plain.
 Together we cannot be.

 Lingering long, killing time
 Whispering lonesome cries
Wondering if to say good bye!
Yet there is fight, left within
Just give up, what would I be.
When your love is so complete.
Cultures are different this we know.
But love has planted this seed.

If like the crest of that mountain there
I could just soar through the air
 Spread my wings, open wide
And once again, begin to fly
The way to you is where I'd end.
On that distant soil, wanting to leave.
And be where life is free.
 Together again with you.

Yet to linger here is all I do
Alone with all my thoughts of you
You're away in a distant land.
 Storms raging where you stand.
A spirit here awaits you're return.
 Caressing memories plan.
 Strong will hope remain.
 Until that final day.

A LESSON FROM THE NOBLE SAVAGE

Out of the Old World came the paler hues;
A trickle, a stream, and then a deluge.
The Indian, with paradise to lose,
Lost it, through war, treaty, and subterfuge.
To noble savages, who had not yet
Invented written language, nor the wheel,
Cold decimation was a real threat
Against strangers with great power and zeal.
Treated in a manner precipitant,
O'erwhelmed by immigrants in his own land,
Noble savage  became a mendicant.
The moral here - that all must understand-
...To maintain the features of your nation,
...You must control, perforce, immigration.

MOTHER EARTH

Clear blue firmament
Dappled by fluffy clouds.
A peaceful dove soars
Across the heavenly sky
And Mother Earth is watching.

A mountainous chasm
Etched in rustic land.
Cougars and wild stallions
Freely roam these ridges
Where Mother Earth keeps watching.

Lush green vegetation
Dots the rugged landscape.
The tranquil waters lap
To ancient tribal beats
While Mother Earth stands watching.

Twilight fast approaches.
A lonely wolf howls
Against the amber setting sun.
Another day in paradise is done
As Mother Earth sighs watching.

LAMENT OF THE MOUNTAINS

Burnt from the sun
quelled and contrite
mountains of sorrow
rise up mightily
time beyond imagination
water rushing
cascading...
snuggling to crevices
blending and remembering..
feral creatures
that roamed freely
unencumbered of fear
their souls forever
etched indelibly
like a love affair
long buried
yet remembered with
secret smiles...
as sun sets once more
on memories that will
not be denied...

WITHIN MY SIGHT

If I could close my eyes
And have her image vanish;
If I could go to sleep,
And if my rest would banish
The lifelong love I keep
Embedded in my sighs ...

Then peace would be the lot
My soul could then embrace:
Providing succor with each fresh breath
To resume the lover’s race;
Decrying pains, denying death
Of hopes which came to naught.

But here she stands within my sight.
The worldly wonders in my view
Can not suppress her form.
Indeed, they make her new
And reignite the fiery storm
I cling to.  My delight.

WORK OF ART

Lovely art work on the table.
Does it have a meaning deeper?
Seems at first glance to be one thing.
Looking hard, we see a keeper
Of this canyon filled with nature,
Lovely waters, ancient trees.

Falling into trance of wonder,
Slipping down the path of dreams,
Seeing things with new eyes clearly,
Showing all the buried things,
Spirit helpers to be seen.

Horse that teaches love of freedom,
Wolf that teaches love of child,
Eagle teaches seeing far off.
Find the truth, don't be beguiled,
Watching where your path will lead.

Waterfall sounds distant thunder,
As the fish do swim and leap.
Cougar watching over all is
Teaching us to guard and keep
Privileges alive and free.

Goddess spirit overlooking
All that is alive and free,
She is watching over all life,
Man and wildlife, you and me.
Caring for all she does see.

VALLEY OF LIFE - A PRAYER

Oh, Goddess of the Earth & Sky
the Spirits of all that Be
Grant us the power from within
To be One with all we see

Guide us through each day & night
to live our lives as One
Fill our minds & hearts with Love
until our lives are done

Teach us of pure waters' flow
of trees that fill our air
Show us how fellow creatures live
together with respectful care

Let our Souls, like birds, take flight
to soar into the sky
With eagle's eyes, then let us see
our land as we fly by

For as we pass through the Valley of Life
we affect all that we touch
We tend to forget all that we need
and that you have given so much

Help us to give as much as we take
for we are the Gardeners of this Earth
Guide us to be all that we can be
as we have been since our birth

THE CANYON

In the canyon, shadowed and still,
I sit by the waters and Dream.
Oh, such beauty, from the Creator,
Cleansing my spirit. The streams
Of Power surround me as silence
Enfolds me, slowly I do see.
Deeper meanings, hidden yet open.
Her Spirit sighs softly to me.

"Look up and listen, open your mind,
Search deeply inside and find
The tie with Nature, given at birth,
Knowing all things are entwined.
This must be found in order to see
The Message still hidden from you.
So seek it now, delving deeply within,
Then look again on this view."

"Many will never progress to this point,
Where Nature is more than a thing
To be taken and used. They that are deaf
Will not hear the Song that She Sings.
Find the symbols, cherished and many,
That I have hidden from man.
The Horse and the Wolf, Spirits and
Helpers, unseen within the land."

"This journey is new, let it begin!
Are you ready for more in your life?
Or at the end, will all be destroyed,
By ignorance, greed and strife?
The choice is yours," She breathed softly to
Me, on the sweet-scented air.
"Open yourself to the wonders I have,
And you will then know how to share."

"Ready and waiting, giving and whole,
Full of my beauty and gifts,
And overflowing, you will then know
The comfort of my tender kiss.
Give of yourself, sharing with others
The magic of loving and care,
Then you will find a new world has opened,
So mystical, fine and rare.

HAVEN

Hide me beneath
your cliffs of stone,
protect me from
life's vultures unknown.
From the waters below
let me drink when I thirst,
cover me with warmth as
through clouds the sun bursts.
Nurture me with gentleness
until all fear is gone,
put the pieces back together,
teach my heart a new song.
It is your kindness that I long for,
your strength I wish to feel,
courage to face the demons,
that drain me of my will.
I yearn to again feel whole,
to be alive and to be free,
and for an end to this search,
when at last I find Me.

ANGEL OF HEAVEN

This woman as a gift from god,
Gave us peace in all of his creatures.
She brought light upon the world.
To show life that love does exist.
gave heart to those who needed it.
This world was her heaven,
Even though we'll never know her.
In some ways we can relate.
To fly like a bird,
To live in a dream,
To see the world from
someone else's point of view.
This angel of heaven,
has given us wings find,
where ever he or she may be.

STORY TELLER

The words slip off his tongue
As we listen
Learn and weep
Lessons of Indian Lore
While he puts us sleep
The fire becomes embers
While the tale comes to an end
Yet we all hug him good night
Glad he is our friend

Tonight the story
Was of a love he had lost
About how it all happened
To turn his heart to frost
 lovers were young
 they frolicked each day
No cares or worries
Were ever in their way
They shared
Cuddled
Kissed
As all lovers do
Then one day all was darkened
They parted quickly
Without a hug or a kiss
Feeling tomorrow they could return to their bliss
Mistaken they were
The storm was severe
It tore up the land
Along with everything dear
The rock where they played
Had become a ravine
Now to this day only her
Image is seen

Lessons of Indian Lore
While he puts us to sleep
The fire becomes embers
While the tale comes to an end
Yet we all hug him good night
Glad he is our friend

MOTHER EARTH

From her hands life's blood flows
The Mother of all life knows
All the animals are of her Earth
Nurtured from their very birth
And when they die once again
They return to their Mother's den
Within the Earth, the very source
Of life's ever burning force
To be taken within her loving arms
Her embrace comforts and warms
All her children born of Earth
For in death there is rebirth

TRIBES BIRTH

In the beginning there was but sky, water, earth and wind
And unto the land a wise and mighty presence did descend
Across the great plains it let its essence be freely blown
Adding the lay of the land to the knowledge already known

Until upon a valley cut deep by a waterfall and rivers associations
Where it said here shall I start filling the land with my creations
And from stone it fashioned all manner of creatures big and small
Then one by one these stone statues he breathed life into them all

Lastly it molded a being different from all that had came before
You shall be as my children and overlook the land forevermore
I give you mind to think and voice to talk and sing your praises
I give you hands and feet and curiosity to seek out all appraises

Many moons have come and gone sense we were filled with life
Many creatures have fought and fell upon our hunting knife
Many lands have felt the touch of our great tribes lust to wonder
Many wish to hear the great spirits voice sounding like thunder

We still guard our sacred trust to watch over all the land
Taking only what we need and never wasting what's on hand
We the Blackfeet Indian honor the history of the tribes birth
And stand proud and tall to dedicate our life to mother earth
