WITHIN

from deep within there is a light
a place that leads you
guides you
It is always there
always beckoning
always seeking.
Though many a wave and storm
have tried to quench this light
it forever shines on
some lights are stronger
then  others giving freely
their warmth to any and all
helping them to come to shore
YOUR light is my guide
and to it  I must come
for without  it I am
lost and alone.
when I give  my light  to you
we become one   and a  source
of never ending brightness.
That light shields us and
protects us  from the storms
So together we must stand
being a guiding light  to all who come.

KEEPER OF THE LIGHT

A lighthouse by the sea
Maintained by technicians just like me.
And as long as I’m about
That light will not go out.

So be on your way,
Enjoy your merry day.
Your well being I ensure
My skills are true and pure.

BEACON IN THE NIGHT

My soul cries out in the night
Wandering aimlessly through the darkness
The darkness that grows within.
Within my lonely world
Can you hear the weeping?
Tears of sorrow so overwhelming
Overwhelming emotions consume
Consume my very essence
Your beacon in the night am I
Beckoning you home safely to my light.
Waiting and watching, as you sail.
Sail amongst the creatures of the sea
The sea that beckons thee eternally.

HURRICANE

Power and corruption,
at the hands of god,
the waves press against the rocks.
Causing a tidal to reverse back and forth.
Dark clouds form above the sky,
Collapsing down to the world below.
The fury in the storm,
Spreads panic upon our home.

As the American flag waves,
against the strong wind so furiously.
We question the fury.
How long do we have to be scared?

When the house lightens up every room.
And all the windows closed.
But the branches tap,
Like someone knocking at the door.

The lighthouse fills the sky,
Alarm fills our heart with pressure.
We wait for it to clear up.
Our thoughts aching for help.

Suddenly the clouds begin to lighten.
As the sun against our eyes.
No longer in need of being frightened.
The chilling hearts cool.

As we step outside,
a rainbow upon our eyes.
The broken tree branches on the ground,
Symbolize that we will never forget,
this day.

LIGHT LOST

Lost emotions of the heart, beyond safe harbors light,
Peering through, misty spray of need, hoping to catch sight,
Of journey's end, sweet haven's port, comfort in Love's inn,
But craggy reefs, hate's barnacles,  rip, it's outer skin,
And then the surge of misery,  flooding, deep, the soul,
Causes it to flounder, 'pon some, lost, forgotten shoal,
Never in this sea of strife, will rescue ever come,
One more, hoping, vessel lost; to grief, it did, succumb...

LIGHTHOUSE

I am the keeper of the light,
I am the haven for all travelers,
I am the one who holds your hopes...
   and dreams of home...
I am the keeper of the light,
 sailors know me,
though they may never see my face,
   they know me.
I am the keeper of your dreams,
for only I can guide you safely to your home...
I am the keeper of your soul,
for only I can guide you past the dangers around you...
I am the keeper of the light,
 you know me,
  you pray for my vigilance,
you pray that I will not fail...
I am the keeper of the light...
 and to you...
  I am your king...

THE BLUFF

The wind tosses the oceans spray...
as if it were unimportant...
as if it were... expendable...
I feel it touch my skin and seep into my spirit...
The skies echo the nonchalance...
hanging heavy and dark...
so low as to seemingly be within reach...
my heart sighs...
my eyes seek the secrets...
the whispers of memories dance...
children's' laughter...
dancing on this bluff in the sunshine...
oh it seemed so long ago...
arms out reached as they run and spin...
tossing bread to the gulls...
his hair of night reflecting the blue of ravens wings...
dark eyes flashing with pleasure at her success
when one gull catches a piece...
she turning to smile back at him... clapping her hands...
the golden glitter of angel dust in her hair...
eyes so blue... so blue...
and again the laughter... Sweet angels...
The spray is tossed again and the stinging touch
of it on my cheeks turns my thoughts
to the stinging of tears... when he left...
the smart crisp cut of his uniform...
the cocky tilt of the hat...
the sun gleaming off its bill...
his touch lifting her chin...
his kiss so sweet...
the look of love in his eyes...
I softly smile... at 17 love is so intense...
and 6 months seems life forever...
Lightening flashes in the clouds...
and my attention wanders from the starry eyed teen
to the sounds of rumbling in the heavens...
Rumbling from another time... on this bluff...
Flashes of lightening that illuminated his face...
ahhh he had been so angry that night...
and she had felt the thrill within as she realized
he loved her deep
to be so angry at her decision to marry another...
he loved her...
and as he turned away
she just caught the flash of pain in his eyes...
A feeling of wonder washes over me
as I let the memory unfold...
seeing her reach out and touch his shoulder...
and pulling to turn him back to her... the pause...
even the wind stilled as the earth held its breath
to see what she would do...
oh God the look in their eyes...
as each soul reached for the other...
the thunder of pounding hearts...
as he took her in his arms...
and kissed her breath away...
Rain started to pour...
as if the clouds could no longer hold the tears within...
As the pictures in my mind faded...
to be tucked safely away...
I struggled to my feet...
and slowly walked the bluff towards home...
he would never walk with me again here...
83 years I had walked this path... every day...
at this same time... 83 years...
I softly sigh.. though the wind stole it from me...
I turned where the path ended...
and looked back at the bluff...
the churning surf...
the sad cries of the gulls... the wind ...
the crying skies...
so appropriate for today...
I took it all in...
then slowly turned and left the bluff...
for the last time.

WHAT IS IT FOR

 I followed your light.
 Leading to distant shores.
 Finding no one there.
 Shadows began to dance.
 On the crashing waves.
 Noticing a figure
 A spirit of doubt.
 Flickers of your power
 Flashed in the night.
I sit as the voice inside.
 Began to speak.

 What am I doing here?
 I know I don't belong?
 Surfing feverishly along
 Meeting this one and that.
 How will I know,
if you will ever be back?
 I've built many pages
 Spent a lot of wages.
 Looking for the answers
 To many questions
 I can't even ask!
 Please, want you tell me?
 Where did I go wrong?
 Tell me, will "I"
 find my way back?

 Loosing sight
 of what was real.
 Give you a smile and
 so much you steal.
 What makes me want
 to tell the truth
 When all I get back
 Will be broken promises.
Maybe I will begin to use?
Dish out more, take no abuse?
 Is it in me?
 Can I be that way?
 Will tomorrow
 be another tragic day?
Tell me please, What is it?
 I am looking for!
 What keeps me here,
 when I could be
 A thousand miles away?

LIGHTHOUSE PURPOSE

Standing in starched silence
Her ivy apron clings to past storms
Over the years of rolling seas
She stood firmly on a mounded foundation
Dark skies, rocky shores, thick fog
Blinded young sailors
Shining her guiding light
To a path of open seas, and adventure
beyond her shore.
She waves a flag of surrender
Her tolling bell chimes beyond her reach
And the path's fence welcomes their return,
their longing , their safety
To receive a glimpse of a flickered past
A light of encouragement for their voyage
back out to life's sea
She stands glowing in her starched silence
Acknowledging her purpose
As a beacon for their path.

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Benevolent beacon:
A lofty sentinel,
You stand tall
Amidst the rocks
And watery expanse.
Your light has flashed
Over centuries,
The warning of danger
To the sturdy liners
And flimsy fishing-smacks
Whom you have cast your gaze upon.
Lost planes
Have navigated by your beam.
You alone have witnessed
The mood swings
of the schizophrenic ocean:
One minute calm and gentle;
The next, as if by whim
of the weather,
Uncontrollably violent
Towards her floating charges.
You alone,
Have warned
of her convulsions;
And guided her children
Back home to safety.

LOOK FOR THE LIGHT

When the skies are dark and you're lost at sea,
When blackened clouds threaten to break free,
When you doubt that you'll ever be safe and warm
Just look for the light in the storm.

When you're far away and longing for friends,
When loneliness builds and your journey ends,
When you tire of roaming the foreign loam
Just look for the porch light of home.

When the days seem bleak and the nights seem long,
When the whole world seems to be going wrong,
When life feels completely out of accord
Just look for the light of the Lord.

A LIGHTHOUSE

A lighthouse, a symbol of guidance,
No matter how large or small,
Has long been viewed by many,
To steer us from life's pitfalls.

A lighthouse as seen by a sailor,
Warns of imminent danger,
Sees only the light it emits,
It's keeper a total stranger.

A lighthouse as seen by a God fearing man,
Is the beacon of a supreme being,
Which lights the way in his life,
He follows , without ever seeing.

A lighthouse as seen by a mother,
May be the guidance she had as a child,
And so passes on to her offspring,
The light she followed, and smiles.

A lighthouse is not just a lighthouse ,
Placed on some lonely rocky place,
But any beacon we have in our lives,
Thus reducing the risks that we face.

CARDBOARD BEACON

On fluke of wind
past memory came
inscription worn
illegible to strangers eye
yet beloved's sight
impacted so hard
so deep, so long ago
finger prints pressed
rubbed dry tear stained
on the cardboard beacon

"You were my Light"
words slowly caressing
burning my naked eyes
each stroke of yesteryear
cutting into paper sharp
caught aflame.

"Agony O' Time unkind!"

Breathless heart
spending upon what now
is dead in flesh
alive in spirit

"Nonetheless Vanity!!" I cry

As my last red drops
love tears unacknowledged
infinite pain
taps onto a once enlightened path
joining dried tears of his
beacon dreams.....
1 cent postcard.

YOUR LIGHT

This has been such a grand day, my Love.
I mean the sky was clear, brilliant blue
and the breeze out on the water was cool
and the dolphins leaped about in pairs.
I'm tellin' ya, it was great.

In fact, things have been very good now
for a long time.  Everything has flowed
in my life so smoothly, so quietly, so serenely.

And all this time while life has treated me well
and I have gone about my business
pretty much self-absorbed
I felt less and less of a need to keep
my eyes upon what was happening in your life.

And then, a couple of hours ago
some little bitty clouds popped up in the sky.
A few more came up out of nowhere
and all of those little buggars
started to link up and form a storm bank.

Even though the setting sun is still
pretty brilliant on the horizon,
its brightness is being dampered
by this gathering of clouds.

And for the first time
in a very long time
my instinct cast my eye
toward the shore

and there, jumping into my dilating pupils,
was my vision of you.
I had forgotten in my giddy self-interest
that you have always
kept a light burning for me.  That same
light which once rescued me from
the most terrible storm of my life ...
That hurricane of loneliness and heartache.

I am so sorry, my Love
that in the bright sunshine of my good times
I have not given thanks for
Your Light.

KEEPING THE LIGHT

Upon the rocky shore
Sheltered from the storms
Weathered and worn
A home, waiting and warm

Brightly its' Light is shown
Guiding us back from turmoil
Leading us home
To its' safety and comfort

Though the seas of Life are rough
Storms ever raging
Your ever glowing Light
Let's us know which way we are going

Keeping in your Light
Keeping darkness at bay
Shine on for us always
For you know always the way

Upon the rocky shore
Brightly its' Light is shown
Though the seas of Life are rough
Keeping ever in Your Light

ANCHOR LIGHT

Whether sky, cloudy, covers dawn,
Or weather sets in over dusk,
Single sentinel signals on,
Fair warning, or warm welcome trust.

Whether many cottage friends meet,
Or hermit rocks beside firelight,
Lone beacon bright, each ship must greet,
Ending and beginning twilight.

Whether on rocky shore or sea,
Both by day and on through each night,
Watchmen raise glass to eye and see,
Wind snapped flags and trimmed sails delight.

Whether calm or impending storm,
Both hearth and tower stay aglow,
So weathered hearts keep courage form,
Beneath sky, cloudy, vesper crow.

STORMS OF LIFE

Hopeless and weary
Weathering alone the storms of life
Like a ship lost at the raging sea
Battling the deadly waves
And melodious wind
Pounding rain I feel on my weather beaten face
Or are their tears well disguised?
I’m in search of a light in the storm
To guide me to  safe harbor
A harbor where I can anchor and rest
And wait for the storm to pass through
Just to fight another coming my way
Ongoing stories till the end of my days.

THE IMPERFECT SECRET

The house over there
With its ghostly white paint
And its miniature light-tower
Casting a light spell
Beyond the flagpoles reach
As the flags whip in the breeze
I can hear its mesmerizing rhythm
I can see its hypnotic perfection
Near the crashing ocean’s edge
Calling to me, violently
Trying to pull me in
Yearning to make me forget
Demanding I be deceived
By the pictures they’ve painted
For all of society to see
But I’ve seen the reality
Beyond the ivory railed fence
As I’ve watched the tiny blonde hair girl
Limping past me, smiling sadly
With her face covered in red welts
And her huge blue eyes almost lost
Within the black holes that circle down
To her blush covered cheeks…
As I remember her terrible screams
Coming from the lit towers peak
During the dark hours of daylight
When vengeance fell upon her- the undeserving
By two strangers, some would call her parents?
I feel the sting of pure and absolute hatred
And know the imperfections of their secret.

THE SCATTERED ASHES- PART TWO

The lighthouse shines as a beacon bell
As I bring her far to rest
She always loved the waves and smell
And asked this last request

To find her rest in life's waters ride-
venturesome and quarreling and enjoying the tide

It took me long to let her spirit rise
She still resides within me so to speak
But in the autumn along the Chesapeake
We laid her down- 'twas wind watering eyes

Where she had grown and been raised yearning-
left on the beach a captains heart burning

My Mother had a gracious spirit
That shone as a beacon in the night
She was not petty and did try to do right
Her faults were many and equal in merit

A gentle soul who suffered much pain-
but brave as well it was in her grain

Great hearted faults not mean- but great gifts as well
She had a particular way of capturing you in her spell
Life was exciting- an adventure each day-
But only after brunch- would she venture forth to play

Never afraid to tell the wicked to go to HELL-
she always was polite as well

She had an aversion to early sleep
And loved the horse and hounds to keep
She played wicked golf and sailed with the best
And learned all the skills to keep a comfortable nest

She had a sense of humor sublime and a plan-
she named her Horse DAMN-U-SAM

Ah the stories I could tell of her defense of the weak
Her support for the orphans, the hurt and the bleak
And she opened her arms to the dogs that would seek
For they would find her, and cuddle and greet

And thus was born a hurtling form-
over hedges and hillocks yelling, "Damn" in the morn

And the huntsman scratched their heads in shame-
Cause she had won this particular game
The wind is particular fierce this time of year
That is why the water- its not a tear

Strong in body, strong in mind-
she was eager to learn- searching to find

For she believed in standing tall
And facing one and facing all
Though she cowered once to her eternal shame
But she was forgiven before she met the flame

She danced on the tables at Vegas when bored -
and gave the tips away to the ladies that poured

She dared to break most of the rules-
But kept her sight on family schools
Education was paramount in her esteem
And to be and Archeologist was her dream

She did her dig- she made her finds-
she was welcomed by scholarly minds

And then she gave up- seduced by the those AD's
She decided that time had passed her so sad
She had lived her life well enjoyed much but the cost
Why did she feel that without youth she was lost?

So like Puff she started to fade-
and poor Jackie Paper had no way to save

SEDUCTIVE SEA

Your restlessness awakens
the curiosity in me
I question my ability
if ever to set you free

Countless times I see
you staring out to sea
blank, without expression
is the mirror I see of me

Your eyes as blue as azure skies
twinkle with childlike wonder
playing the games of make believe
upon the frothy waves of yonder

What hold has she, this one called Sea
your mistress, you cannot deny
visions, adventures, guilt free
all this she has promised to thee

Undulating waves, fluid in motion
rhythmic she plays on your emotions
God given her beauty, natural you see
blue sea, blue eyes, blue skies.. blue me

No longer can my love hold you
I've fought the fine fight and lost
Had she been mortal, I might do battle
her magnificence immortal sublime

I pale in comparison to her beauty
but my arms were faithful and true
my heart never beckoned another
my dreams desired only you

Sail away on the tide that binds
your heart to the seductress sea
play out your wildest fantasy
cast off all your ties to me

The beacon that you followed here
will aid you in your retreat and know
that when it's extinguished ...out of sight
so too ... the candle in my heart

MORE THAN DREAMS

'Twas on a summer's eve of long ago
in simpler times and pace more slow...
A cottage leased at ocean's edge
with thundering waves against the ledge...
The scene of where two souls did meet,
beginning of a love so sweet.
When lost for years, their hearts cried out...
their minds afraid and full of doubt
they'd ever find a mate for soul...
If this was in their fate foretold.
Now in answer to their dreams,
with mutual caring their only theme...
They reveled in their new-found love,
experiencing more than they'd dreamed of.

BEACON OF HOPE

Tossed about
on angry waves,
searching the night
through sea mist and haze.

The fear in his heart
that life soon be lost,
he fights tattered sails,
not weighing the cost.

On a far distant shore,
a Keeper of Light,
alone searches the darkness
for a ship lost this night.

Suddenly the captain
spies the Beacon of Hope,
and with newfound strength,
keeps his craft afloat.

The wind then shifts,
pushing him toward the shore,
and this Hero in the storm
rescues the lost once more.

NIGHT LIGHT

The light shines bright
Pushing back the darkness of night
A light that attracts and yet keeps people at bay
For damaging rocks lie in the way
Standing isolated and alone on shore
Serving the purpose it was built for
Helping others at a distance
Rarely attracting a second glance
It doesn't expect any appreciation
From the people who safely reach their destination
Thanks to the guiding light it provides
Standing at the edge of the ocean's tides
It merely shines its light when needed
In hopes that its warning will be heeded

BEACON OF LOVE OR HOPE?

I'm wading in the shore
the waves sounding in my ear
was it a beacon of love or hope
that finally drew me here.

I'm standing at your door
been staring for much too long
even if it opens to true love
I know that I'll soon be wronged.

Such beauty I adore
as I gaze upon your face
now there's nothing at all in this world
that will take me from this place.

LOVELIGHT

I hear thy tender voice call from afar
a haunted sound as from a distant star
oh how it calls to me
across the open sea
a lonely ship that longs to cross the bar

A ship adrift upon the sea of life
It's battered hull reveals the pain and strife
of beating through the gale
with tattered ragged sail
and now prepared to die beneath the knife

But wait, my shining beacon does she see
a spark of light in gray eternity
she need not hit the rocks
nor tie to strange port docks
nor drift forever helpless on the sea

For I am Love, the beacon on the shore
my light of love shall shine on her once more
and gone shall be the pain
her heart will smile again
my warmth be wrapped around her as before

For my warm love I ask a simple fee
a gift that only she can give to me
perhaps a simple rose
pure white as winter's snows
then I am hers for all eternity

LIGHT IN THE STORM

The lighthouse shines through the dark
Shedding it's light as a landmark
It's light of hope lighting up the world
As the waves of emotions crash upon the shore
The lighthouse stand up straight and tall
As a symbol of hope through the seas of emotions
As a symbol of guidance for sailors on these oceans
Although the rage of emotions , like a sea of red wine
The lighthouse shines a light to carry on through time

Although our ships of thought may wander off track
It's the light of the lighthouse that helps guide us back
For the light of the lighthouse shines through thick and thin
It helps shed some light on the turmoil we're in
It's the lighthouse that tends to light our way
And help us get through each and every day

THE LIGHTHOUSE

A lighthouse stands, lost at sea
So silently alone

Its searching light, reaches out
But no one is at home

No one hears its lonely call
To comfort its distress

No one cares, it falls apart
Its foundation's now a mess

Battered by  the stormy seas
The ships, they just pass by

Un-needed in this day & age
The lighthouse is left to die

Its searching light that beckons out
To reach across the sea

It stands alone, at the edge of the world
That lighthouse.... it is me.

I AM THE LIGHTHOUSE

Slowly the waves crash
Unto the rocks below
My light shines bright
With an even glow
warning ships afar
Of the coming shore
Been burning for so long
I cant be ignored
It is my calling card
It is my duty by the sea
I love when people visit
And come to visit me
I cannot explain the feeling
The pleasure is so great
To know that I am needed
To live without the haste
The desire is so strong
To insure that people live
And learn from the light
That I constantly give
The coast is so beautiful
And to see it just once
Can brighten any day
As you eat a picnic lunch
So as I bid farewell
In my lighthouse by the sea
Please remember all
To come and visit me

LOVE LIGHT

her height of four feet eleven inches
she was by many
considered small
yet she dwarfed in wisdom and compassion
the tall white oaks
that I climbed as a young boy

her winsome smiles
elevated my love for her
as she stood at our window
peering out at me
as I did what every little boy does

I somehow knew
even at that early age
she would stand the tests of time
surely as the famed White Cliffs of Dover

solid as ageless stone
she stood firm in her convictions
yet giving
and understanding
always with a smile
for any weary wayfarer
that splashed upon her door

many years tendered gracefully
in service of her charges
going unnoticed to the casual eye
yet always done with a kind word
and a tireless heart

I've no doubt
whatsoever in my mind
as I ponder upon her
and all she's done for me
that I could not be the person I am today
without her guiding light
to lead me through the squalls of youth

this is for you mom
my ever present watchtower
my shining light
my beacon by the sea
that kept always burning
your love light
within your heart for me
I love you.

THE STORM

A storm is brewing
Just over the horizon
The water is rough
With horrid waves
Crashing into the rocky banks

The trees sway
As they so often do
Wondering
When their branches
Will finally snap

The flag of patriotic honor
Is thrown from side to side
As if the printed symbols
That appear on its surface
Mean nothing at all

The little house
That seems so secure
Is even jolted
From the unmerciful storm
That gave no prior warning

We can never be prepared
For what is to come
For what lies
Just over the horizon

And in not heeding
The warnings given
No matter how sturdy
And strong we seem
We too
Shall feel its effects

VACATION WONDERLAND

Palm trees sway
can't you see them
casting shadows
where we plan to swim

Blurry my sight
A cocktail delight
At play in a vacation wonderland

Come what may there's suntan beauties
Many small bathing suit clad cuties
Come to put a smile on my face
Well it's no disgrace
At play in a vacation wonderland

There goes Mrs. Jones to the lighthouse
Pretending she doesn't care
But when she gets there
She will have an affair
At play in a vacation wonderland

Later on, she and I will conspire
To try to set the night on fire
The nights are so hot
If only we don't get caught
At play in a vacation wonderland
