KID SHOPPING
Carefully I choose the children
from among the other groceries on the shelves,
placing them gently into my shopping basket.
I bend down, sselecting a little blonde one
from about knee high,
and I notice that her ponytail holder is missing
and her braid is coming unravelled.
I head for the cash register,
stopping to purchase a watch on the way.
but instead I buy maximum strength sanitary pads
because I have a fifteen cents off coupon.
We are late for school now,
and I still cannot find anything
with which to tie back the child's hair.
I park my shopping cart in the lot
and check the time on the watch I had all along.
It says 9:07,
but it tells me it is 9:16.
Susie plays a joke on me,
holding the doors shut,
but finally she relents and I enter the building.
I cannot remember where I am supposed to go.
then I see Frau Stegerwald in the hallway.
Someone is playing a Wagner opera for Zeigen und Zahlen
and I wonder if I should drop the class.
