MIDNIGHT SNACK
The coyote crouches,
cool in the nighttime shadow of the giant cactus.
The wild dog watches and waits
as the hare takes its last breaths.
The desert air is quiet and crisp
and the jackrabbit is silently suspicious.
She comes upon a single blade of grass
among the rocks and tumbleweeds;
and as she takes the long, lucious emerald into her mouth,
the coyote makes his move.
Sharpened teeth send sinewy flesh and fur flying,
staining the ground sanguine.
The rabbit didn't even have time to flee,
her own chewing masking the moves of the coyote.
All that remains now are the hare's broken bones
as the coyote belches in the night.
