Remember love, when we were babes,
Christmas gifts we once wished for?
Dolls, games, puzzles and toys,
Yo-yo's, marbles and more.
A bride doll dressed up in white,
A ballerina doll up on toe,
Just a couple of things upon my list
For Christmas so long ago.
At ten years young I wouldn't want to live
If those dolls weren't under the tree.
I'd tear at the boxes until they revealed
The pretty faces staring up at me.
The years passed and, too,
The fads we kids went through.
"I've got to have that hula hoop,
Nothing else will do!"
The years marched on, I had babes myself
With eyes that sparkled when they saw
Old St. Nick in a crystal globe,
Shaking it to watch the snow fall.
I saw Christmas then through the babes' eyes,
It was they who hoped they would get
That Barbie doll, G.I. Joe, building blocks
Or that "neat" train set.
We're left now alone, the babes are all gone,
They've moved far away from home.
Soulmates they've found, in love they are,
Soon they'll start having babes of their own.
I see Christmas now through the grand-babes' eyes,
Yes, now they must have the "in" things,
Computer games, electronic toys
And whatever else Santa will bring.
I've received many gifts through the years,
Now lost, torn up or never used.
Only three gifts I've cherished within that time,
Those babes, grand-babes and you.
