"My Hero"

My hero wears a poppy, as all good heroes do

He's got cardboard filling in his shoes, and a leaky jacket too

He hasn't had a shave today, but then that's nothing new

He hasn't washed for many a day, but his heart is true.

Come Sunday at the memorial, he'll stand in the shade

Fighting his arthritis to stand straight as a blade.

There'll be a tear in his eye, a sad melancholy look,

As he ponders the value of all the lives they took.

Was it really worth it? You might just hear him sigh.

As he shuffles in the autumn chill beneath an icy sky.

My hero wears a poppy, as all good heroes do

And I must say if he can, then surely so can you.
