SIMULATED SNOWFALL
The simulated snow swirled
around the surrogate skiier
in the closet-sized studio.
Perched atop a mountain
of pillows and sheets
she angled her skiis down the drift.
Were this a real winter scene,
the model, clad in only sunglasses, skiis,
and a white bustier to match the snow,
would have contracted hypothermia.
But on the indoor slopes
sweat ran between her breasts.
The assistant who had done her hair and makeup
stood off-camera with a box of styrofoam popcorn,
ready to imitate a blizzard
the minute the fan was turned on.
but the fan was too strong
or the styrofoam was too light
or the shutter snapped too quickly,
because when the proofs came back
the snow appeared only in front of the model,
pelting into her chest
and collecting in her cleavage.
