Carshalton Cottage Hospital

About the Hospital The Opening Ground Investigations Archaeological Potential The Site of the Building

The Cottage Hospital was a building in Rochester Road which was until recently one of the London Borough of Sutton's clinics, but which has now been knocked down and built over. At the turn of the 19th century, construction of the original building cost £1100 and the furnishing £100, equivalent to ~75k today in total. There was no National Health Service at that time, and it was made possible by donation and voluntary contributions.

It served Carshalton and Wallington, a growing district, and was extended to meet demand, but within twenty years was superceded by a hospital in Carshalton Park**, and became a day-nursery/clinic.
