Carshalton Cottage Hospital

About the Hospital The Opening Ground Investigations Archaeological Potential The Site of the Building

Recent ground investigations when tied to what is known from old maps and other documents reveal that there is material relating to medieval settlement and one of the major houses of Carshalton, from what is called the 'Early Modern' period:-

On 17 August 2000 a contractor dug two trenches into the car park of the Cottage Hospital opposite 16 Rochester Road, ... dug with the rear bucket of a JCB. They were narrow and unstable and could not be entered...

deposits in trench 1 consisted of brown soil which was rubbley especially towards the top. The soil rested on a mixture ... This was clearly natural ...

...in trench 2 ... brick resting on a layer of flint, chalk and mortar ... appeared to be the footing of an east-west running wall...

The oldest bricks in the soil were difficult to date ... could be as early as the late 17th century.
