On May 24th 1899 it was Queen Victoria's eightieth birthday, celebrated in Carshalton by the opening of the Cottage Hospital; the opening was described as follows:-
Mr. J. TYLER, chairman of the Building Committee presided at the opening ceremony, which was performed by the Earl of Rosebey, after prayer by the Rev. Lord Victor Seymour** (rector). Among those who also accepted invitations to be present were the Lord Chief Justice of England (Lord Russell of Killowen), Lord Coleridge, Mr. Justice and Lady Bucknill, and Sir J. Whittaker Ellis.
Lord ROSEBERY, in the course of his speech, remarked on the equality of positions - that the rich man could have only one dinner, and that the person who fared less sumptiuously generally had the best of health. But the great advantage of wealth was that it enabled its owners to give to those they loved, when sick and aged, the best medical advice, and the benefit of an easier existence and change of climate. The noble lord spoke of the benefits which poorer classes derived from the care and skill bestowed upon the patients, and wished the present institution every success and usefulness.
In the evening there was a grand parade of the friendly societies, firemen, & c., the bands of the 3rd London Rifles, the Sutton Town Band, and the Mitcham Band taking part therein. There was also a grand illumination of the village ponds***.
