For a quarter of a century prior to the establishment of the Cottage hospital, there were some kind of health care services operating on the site, although the road was not fully completed and handed over until just over a decade before the opening. A Homeopathic Dispensary is listed as operating there.***

The site is near Stone Court at the NW corner of Grove Park centred on the junction of Mill Lane / North Street. It was a 'medieval sub-manor' of Carshalton, dating to the 14th century, and is an important part of the settlement history of the middle ages.
