George's wife Jennie had previously been married to his cousin - who happened to have exactly the same name as George. George's niece Evelyn Sickles Davidson remembered hearing from her father Will Sickles (George's brother) that George had
died in the typhoid fever epidemic following World War I. Will did not speak favorably of Jennie, feeling that she took advantage of his sympathy after the death of her first husband. According to Evelyn's brother Bill Sickles, George was
persona non grata in the family - he wasn't to be spoken of. A look at George's death certificate reveals the reason why - he died of syphilis. Apparently, his relatives blamed Jennie for his death and made up a cover story about the cause.
