[258]
General Daniel E. Sickles was, by far, the most famous member of the Sickles family, who led a long and illustrious (some would say infamous) career as a politician, soldier, and diplomat. He was tried for murder, lost his leg in battle, was
an inveterate womanizer and close friend to five different Presidents. It's no wonder that a 1956 biography about him was called Sickles the Incredible.
[260]
There's some confusion around Dan's year of birth - due primarily to some of his own disinformation. In a 1905 letter responding to an inquiry from the War Department, the General (as he was known by his relatives) gave his birthdate as
October 20, 1825 - a date that often appears in reference books.
[262]
But the 1860 census shows his age as 40 years old - indicating, since he had not had his birthday yet that year, a birth year of 1819. The General's biographers Pinchon and Swanberg note that he routinely lied about his age, though they give
no reason for the deception other than vanity. But a New York Evening Post article reveals that the General's parents were married on January 30, 1820 - more than three months after he was born! It seems that embarrassment may have been the
true motive for his reticence about revealing his true age.
