INDEX

[77] William was only 8 years old when his father died in 1815. He presumably lived with his mother Rebecca and stepfather James Robinson until making his first appearance in a New York City directory in 1828 as a hatter at 10 Thomas Street.

[78]

[79] Given that both his stepfather and wife were named Robinson, it may be that William's wife Mary Ann was his stepsister. The 1850 census shows an Alexander Robinson living with William and his family in Manhattan. It seems likely that
Alexander was related to William's wife or stepfather.

[80]

[81] Judging by the census and city directories, it appears that William and his family moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood around 1855. That year is confirmed by the obituary of William's son George in a 1902 issue of the
Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

[82]

[83] According to the book New York in the War of the Rebellion, William enlisted in the Army at New York on June 23, 1862 for what was to have been a three-year hitch and was commissioned Second Lieutenant on December 17. It's not unreasonable to
assume that his nephew, the politically well-connected General Daniel E. Sickles, had something to do with William attaining such a high rank so quickly. But, barely more than a year later, on June 27, 1863, he was dishonorably discharged,
though no reason is given in the book.

[84]

[85] William and his wife Mary Ann are buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, in Lot # 18923, Section K, purchased by William's wealthy brother George.
