Steve Claridge is responsible for scoring
2 of the greatest goals in the history of Leicester City. In May 96 City
were once again beneath the twin towers of Wembley for a Division One
play-off final, this time against Crystal Palace. With the game heading
towards a penalty shoot-out Claridge hit an relentless volley from the
edge of the box in the last minute of EXTRA time, sending Leicester back
into the Premier League from where they'd been relegated 12 months earlier.
They say Lightening doesn't strike twice! Well it does.
Claridge's other wonder strike was the winning goal that swept City to
Coca-Cola Cup glory at Hillsbrough in April 97. Struck again in extra-time,
converting a close-range effort, to bring the cup back to Filbert Street.
Claridge was signed from Birmingham City for £1.2
million on March 1st 96 and made 79 appearances during which he scored
21 goals before moving on to Wolves on March 26th 98 for £400,000.
If Claridge had scored just those two goals mentioned here, City fans
everywhere would considered him a bargain buy |
