Len Glovers left wing skills and pace
bewildered many a full back, and it was a genuine tribute to the player
that he became a favourite of the City supporters, whose roar whenever
Len received the ball must have unnerved almost any team visiting Filbert
Street.
Len came to Leicester in 1968 when Matt Giles paid £80,000
(at the time an English record for a winger). Goals by Len took City through
too the 1st two rounds of their 1969 Cup run to Wembley. Two years later
he often sparred with the defences of Second Divisions teams as part of
Leicesters promotion Campaign.
After returning to Division 1 Len was responsidble for
crossing many of Frank Worthington's goals, and when City reached the
Cup semi-finals in 1974, Len scored the equalising goal in the replay
against Liverpool. (Liverpool eventually won)
After returning from the USA, he was involved in one last FA Cup campaign,
having played for Kettering in a 1st Round victory over Tilbury in November
1977.
Retiring and becoming a publican, he made a return
to football in 1994, when taking on the manager's role at Harlow Town
FC; and was registered as a player by mid season, making a brief comeback
in January 1995 at the ripe age of 50. The first 50 year old to appear
in the Diadora League.
