Comment: August 22nd:
Just as he did last season, Flemington trainer David Hall has taken
an early lead in the Geelong trainers' premiership. Adding to his win at
the track two weeks ago, his mare Phantom's Opera broke through for her
first win in easy style.
Local trainers had their best day in some months, training the winners
of three out of the eight races on the card. Mark Young's lightly raced
Eastern Spirit outstayed his rivals to take victory in the Holden Maiden
Plate over 2240m. Consistent gelding Culzean, from the David Conners stable,
proved too good when winning the Geelong Cup Carnival Oct 22-23 Class 1
Hcp. And Race 8 brought up the treble for the locals when Bruce Elkington's
Pindarri Gold, aiming for back-to-back wins, came with a rush down the
outside of the track to overpower the leaders.
One of the more impressive winners of the day was the Bill Mitchell-trained
Zedatzi, who appreciated the give in the track to thrash a field of Class
6 sprinters by a massive seven lengths.
Colin Alderson's mare Skyworth enjoyed her drop from a city race to
class 1, winning well in Race 4.
The performance of Matt Ellerton's Wind Storm was impressive, stepping
up from a defeat in a Class 1 to a Class 4 victory, but was overshadowed
by the drama on the line as Terrace met with interference and lost rider
Dan Nikolic, who escaped with minor injuries.
The other winner on the day was the Lee Freedman-trained son of Fuji
Kiseki, Tomakomai, who was making his racetrack debut.
Comment: August 8th:
Eight trainers began the new Geelong season on a high by saddling up
a winner at the meeting on August 8th.
Last year's joint winner Tony McEvoy broke a fair run of outs at the
course when his honest gelding Westminster Hall broke his maiden status
in the Geelong Cup Carnival maiden plate. Myles Plumb's royally bred Throng
continued his trainer's good strike rate at the track when he scored well
on debut. David Hall's Cool Talk Cafe upset his more favoured stablemate
in the Holden Class 1 Hcp when he took his unbeaten record to two from
two. Hall also spent a lot of time in the runners-up stall, training three
place-getters for the day. Leon McDonald's Mootang narrowly won the Schweppes
Super Vobis 3yo maiden plate. Greg Mance trained the winner of the feature
race of the day, Martial Rule, as a 16-1 chance, while a similar longshot
scored in the previous race, with Ken Phillips' Elizabeth Therese taking
victory. South Australian trainer Mark Lewis hopped over the border and
his mare Scarlet made the trip worthwhile when she retained her unbeaten
record at Geelong. Tony Krushka continued his recent winning run when his
two Geelong-lovers, El Mozo and Rekoba, fought out the Class 2 Hcp, with
El Mozo narrowly beating his stablemate. He has now won two and been placed
three times at the circuit.
