The Geelong Cup is one of the most well known and well attended Country Cup meetings on the Victorian racing calendar. The race is run over 2400m and often used by trainers to either qualify or fitten their quality staying horses for that famous first Tuesday in November.
The Geelong Cup is run on the first day of the Geelong Carnival, usually on the third or fourth Wednesday in October. The race is currently sponsored by Holden. It carries blacktype status (Group 3, upgraded from Listed from season 2002-2003), $120,000 in prizemoney, plus $6,500 worth of trophies for winning connections, and a prize rug.
First run in 1872, the race was won by a horse called Flying Scud. This was 31 years after the first meet was staged on the Geelong track, in 1841.
