Italy is in Southern Europe, a peninsula extending into the central Mediterranean Sea, northeast of Tunisia. Italy's unique boot shape makes it one of the most easily recognized countries in the world! The 100 to 150 mile-wide peninsula stretches 760 miles into the Mediterranean Ocean, making it the fourth largest country in Western Europe. Italy is also comprised of two large islands: Sicily - the biggest and most populous of all the Mediterranean islands, and Sardinia, the second largest but least populated. The whole population is almost 58 million.

It also has two independent countries within its borders. Vatican City is the center for the Roman Catholic Church, and is the world's smallest country. San Marino, on the north east coast of Italy, is an independent republic.

The capital of Italy-the city of Rome-today is a bustling place, full of traffic and crowds. It is amazing how sites of ancient culture and modern urban life coexist together in the modern country. People live alongside the temples, marketplaces and public buildings of the past. Italy has a lot of old cities worth visiting such as Bologna, Venice, Ferrara, Neapol, Tourin etc.

The climate is very different for all parts of peninsula. Summer is hot, especially in the south. Spring and autumn are mild with fine, sunny weather. Winter in the south is much drier and warmer than in northern and central areas. Mountain regions are colder with heavy winter snowfalls.
