Personal Philosophy Discussion
My educational philosophy incorporates bits and pieces of the following philosophies: Epistemology and Logic. I find the Epistemological philosophy quite attractive because I plan to teach high school math and I must decide how I am going to convey knowledge to my students as well as try to understand individual learning strategies. In order to do this, I as an Epistemologist must realize that students implement various methods of gaining knowledge. First of all, I realize that students can get significant amounts of knowledge based on authority such as the expert, teacher such as myself, or any one who is competent in the subject matter. They can also gain knowledge by spiritual means, intuition, and from personal experiences incorporating all five senses. With an understanding how students absorb knowledge, it will give me the extra edge necessary to become an effective teacher.
I believe that students can also obtain knowledge through deductive and inductive reasoning more so than by intuition. I can say that I am a logical person frequently using deductive and inductive reasoning to formulate my conclusions. This is probably why I find math and Sherlock Holmes so alluring! Honing students' thinking skills with the use of logic allow students to generate conclusions from the general to specific and vice versa. This particular skill will be valuable with not just math but with every aspects of their life.
