The role of professional and personal goals in instructional practice

My major philosophical orientation of teaching implements the Social Reconstructionism and Progressivism points of view. I believe that schools can become powerful tools to change their society and children are intellectual beings capable of changing their environment by either creating, changing, or destroying them. I agree with George Counts, also a reconstructionist, who believes that children can make an impact on worldwide issues such as war, inflation, stock market, world hunger, and the like. As a teacher, I will focus on the student as a whole taking into consideration their interests, needs, and any other relevant issues they may have. I will promote interactions between students and teachers and encourage interactions between students so as long as it is beneficial to their learning. Following the Progressive philosophy, my students will be given math problem solving strategies on a day to day basis. Considering my students are in high school, my modus operandi will grant students the freedom to grade their own homework assignment, to encourage them to ask questions when necessary, and to voice their concerns openly.
