A-Series Engine Numbers

There are more variations of the A-Series engine than you may think. And a number of them can be fitted to the Minor without fuss. How many times has the engine been changed in your car before you bought it? Are you sure that the engine in your car really belongs there?

Some vans had 10AB 1098cc engines fitted, usually in a low compression form. FWD parts are of limited use on the Minor, but some bits are interchangeable. You can, if you are really determined, make a FWD block fit, but for one thing, the crankshaft is no good, and the oil pick up will need a thread put in it for the oil strainer.

The first three numbers, USHM1, 2 and 3 are for the side valve unit, which is NOT an 'A' series.

The 'MM' engine number is stamped on a plate riveted to the flywheel housing (bell housing on these engines is part of the block).
