Morris and Austin Day
12 March, 2000

Last year it was bitterly cold and breezy. This year, we were treated to sunshine, mild temperatures and a light breeze. Perfect for a few hours idly admiring over 150 Minors, A35s, Oxfords, Austin 7s and any number of variations and specials. It was great :)

Alan Hill, from Over the Hill Motor Company in Surrey, UK, provided two amazing cakes as prizes for the youngest and oldest drivers on the day. I can't remember the names but they were 17 and 83 years old. The cakes were true works of art and I can't imagine how any Morris Minor enthusiast could bear to cut them up! I'm sure that the maker, Jan May, would be happy to make you one too. Phone here on (01252) 782854 (UK).

A couple of modified Minors caught my eye. The first, built by "the guy I bought the car from", is powered by an MG-B 1800cc B-series engine. The car has some nice touches such as the frameless full width electric windows and the front doors, 'pop-out' rear side windows, and a forward-tilt bonnet. The bonnet hinges up and forwards on cleverly made hinges, with extra tilt provided by adjustable hinge stops.

The second car is powered by a tuned 2-litre Fiat Twin Cam putting out around 130bhp. It started out life as a two-door saloon, but now sports a soft top and full rollcage. The flared guards and recessed rear number plate were all done by the owner, Kevin, from Essex. In the boot hides a custom made 12 gallon fuel tank, but as Kevin says, the driving range is no better than a standard Minor sue to the rather thirsty 20-miles-to-the-gallon Fiat engine!

We left before the cavalcade of cars around the historic Brroklands race track, but reports have it that over 130 cars took part. Always an awesome sight :)
