New Age Music
- the art of relaxation and meditation
Choose from one of the options below:
Introduction
New age music probably started to develop in the 1960s and 1970s as an alternative to the consumer driven materialistic societies that were becoming established in the west. The aim was to mirror the natural ebb and flows of the planet we live on - the movement of the heavens and the oceans, of wind, rain and thunder. It has connections with ambient music which was probably first brought to the attention of the public by Brian Eno and then Harold Budd. Many new age musicians have been influenced by these composers. Once established some composers developed an interest in the music of native tribes throughout the world in Tibet, Africa and South America. Their music reflected the essence of the sacred rituals and dances of these tribes. One such composer was Michael Stearns who crossed over from ambient music to this form of world music.
Alongside new age music was the growth in alternative health remedies such as reiki and yoga which sought to establish a natural sense of balance and general well-being. New age music has been used extensively to aid both relaxation and meditation. Undoubtedly, the music can generate a state of euphoria and of inner peace. It can help the listener to feel part of the universe and that we are all interconnected.
