GEORGE
THOMPSON, Goalkeeper A
very agile 'keeper, he joined Preston from Scunthorpe after earlier
experience with Chesterfield. Son
of a one-time Sheffield United goalkeeper, Thompson is the brother of
Burnley's 'keeper, Desmond Thompson.
Off the field is a brilliant artist, specialising in caricatures of
League footballers. |

WILLIE
CUNNINGHAM, Right Back Hailing from Hill o' Beath,
Fifeshire, he has played at right back for the Scotland "B"
team, but originally joined the club as a left back. It was Mr. Will
Scott, then Preston's manager, who visualised Cunningham as a more
successful defender on the other flank, and since this move the former
Airdrie player has made considerable progress.
He is a cousin of Jimmy Baxter, the Preston inside left. |
|
JOE
WALTON, Left Back It was with Manchester United that
Walton leapt into the forefront soon after the war.
Played for an England XI against Scotland in the Bolton Disaster
Fund game at Maine Road. Later lost his place to the international
defenders Carey (Eire) and Aston (England) in the Manchester United side
and moved on to Preston. Places
the ball with delightful accuracy. |
|
TOMMY
DOCHERTY, Right Half He was a Celtic reserve when
Preston signed him, attracted by his resemblance to Willie Shankly whom he
later succeeded in the Preston and Scotland teams. A tremendous worker,
Docherty has. now fully recovered from the cracked ankle bone which kept
him out of the side earlier in the season. His hobby is collecting
gramophone records. |
|
JOE
MARSTON, Centre Half An Australian from Sydney, he was
recommended by letter to the Preston club by an old supporter now living
in the Dominion. So impressed
was Mr. Will Scott by this letter that he invited Marston, who worked in a
packing case factory, to fly to Preston for a trial.
This was arranged. The man who in Australia was an outstanding swimmer, athlete
and golfer has, in England, become one of the strongest pivots in the game. |
|
WILLIE
FORBES, Left Half Joined his present club by way of
Wolverhampton Wanderers and Dunfermline. A Scot, with Dunfermline he
frequently played at wing half, but Wolves converted him for a time into a
first-class inside forward. A deadly tackier, Forbes has an interesting
hobby. He collects
photographs of every match in which he takes part.
Now has about a dozen books packed tight with them. |

TOM
FINNEY, Outside Right (Capt.) " Footballer
of the Year", and everywhere hailed as the world's greatest wingman,
Finney was born m a house overlooking Deepdale.
Tells me he watched his first game at Deepdale when just six years
old. Later became a
regular fan. Because he admired Alex James so much developed into an
inside left. Finney weighed 6
St., and stood only 5 ft. I in., when he signed amateur forms for Preston
while serving his time as an apprentice plumber.
By accident became a right-winger when during a match the " A
" team's outside right was injured and wee Finney was tried in this
position. As a left- and right-winger has played 49 times for England.
To-day captains the team he has followed since a boy.
Tom, by the way, owns a thriving plumbing and electrical business
in Preston. |
|
BOB
FOSTER, Inside Right Signed from Chesterfield, in
First Division football Foster has made rapid progress.
A delightful ball player, two seasons ago he was chosen to
accompany the " Young England " team which played in France.
This season succeeded the late Derek Lewis at inside right in the
Preston League side. |
|
CHARLIE WAYMAN, Centre
Forward Scorer of over 200 League goals " Cheerful Charlie
" is one of the most popular and smallest centre forwards in the
game. A former miner, it was while serving in the Royal Navy, and guesting
for Portsmouth, that he caught the attention of the big clubs, but when
demobbed he returned home to play for Newcastle United who had signed him
before he became a sailor. In those days Wayman was an inside left.
Converted into a centre forward, he experienced tremendous success
with Newcastle and Southampton before joining Preston. Wears a pair of
light-weight shooting boots given him when playing for Southampton in
Brazil. |
|
JIMMY BAXTER, Inside Left
A Scot, he made his early reputation as a wing half back with Dunfermline,
passed on to Barnsley, became an inside left, and at Deepdale is
recognised as one of soccer's deep-thinkers. During his career has broken
a toe, his jaw, left hand and two ribs ! |
|
ANGUS MORRISON, Outside Left
It was while playing in Services football that Morrison was recommended to
Derby County by an officer fan. They were so delighted with Morrison's
success at centre forward that the club presented their unofficial scout
with a box of cigars as a present ! Later
converted into left winger, this speedy forward joined Preston and last
season played for Scotland's " B " team. |
