Player profiles out of the Wembley Match Day
Programme
|
JAMES
SANDERS, Goalkeeper Signed from Chariton Athletic in 1945, this
Hackney-born player was Albion's first choice until Norman Heath took over
two years ago. He gets
his chance to-day because of the spinal injury Heath suffered a month ago.
Sound rather than spectacular and is not likely to be affected with
nerves. Height 5 ft. II
in.;weight 12 st. |
|
STUART
WILLIAMS Right Back This 23-year-old reserve gets his chance
because of injury to Rickaby. Turned in some outstandingly good
performances in the Albion " serial " with Chelsea last season.
To-day marks his first appearance in this season's Cup competition.

LEONARD MILLARD, Left
Back (Capt.) Since making his first-team debut in 1942,
Albion's 33-year-old captain has been almost an ever-present.
He has already beaten the record of Albion appearances set up by
Jesse Pennington. Coseley-born, Millard joined the club 17 years ago from
Sunbeam Works team, and has played in almost every position.
Height 5 ft. 9 in.; weight
11 st. 7 Ib. |
|
JAMES DUDLEY, Right Half
On the fringe of the Scottish international side, Gartosh-born Dudley has
already played for his country's " B " team.
Among the hardest workers in the Albion side, he is equally strong
in attack and defence, and has a wealth of experience although he is only
24. Height 5 ft. 10 in. ;
weight II st. 8 Ib. |
|
JAMES
DUGDALE, Centre Half Although Joe Kennedy was strongly
fancied as England's centre half until he was injured midway through last
season, Dugdale's brilliant form since he took over has kept his
predecessor in the Albion reserve side.
Having already represented England " B," it appears to be
only a question of time before Jim receives full international honours.
Liverpool-born, he went to the Hawthorns in 1952. Height 5 ft. 10
in.; weight II st. 6 Ib. |
|
RAY BARLOW, Left Half
Generally regarded as the best attacking wing half in soccer to-day,
well-built, thrustful Barlow is a brilliant ball player and distributor.
Swindon-born, he joined West Bromwich at the age of 15, and
although his tendency to " wander " with the ball at his feet
may well be responsible for the fact that he has not gained tnore
international honours, he still has time to become an England regular.
Height 6 ft. ; weight 13 st. |
|
FRANK GRIFFIN, Outside Right
On Bolton Wanderers' books as an amateur, Manchester-born Griffin joined
Shrewsbury Town in 1949, and after a season there, during which time he
gained valuable experience under former international winger Sammy Crooks,
was transferred to West Bromwich. Fast,
slightly-built Griffin is a team player in the real sense of the word.
Height 5 ft. 8 in.; weight 10 st. 10 Ib. |
|
REGINALD
RYAN, Inside Right Dublin-born Ryan, like Dudley, is
a " naturalised " Midlander, having moved to Coventry when he
was eight. The perfect inside
man to play in front of an attacking wing half of the Ray Barlow type,
this Irish international has played no small part in Albion's success this
season. His soccer accomplishments include a devastating long throw.
Height 5 ft. 8 in.; weight II st. 9 Ib. |
|
RONALD ALLEN, Centre
Forward One
of the smallest leaders in the game, Allen was signed from Port Vale as a
winger four years ago, and made his England debut on the wing.
So effective has been his wandering style this season, however,
along with inside-man Johnny Nicholls, that both were chosen for the
Hampden match against Scotland last month in an attempt to reorganise the
England attacking style. Quick thinking and speed off the mark have made
Allen a real problem for opposing centre halves. Height 5 ft. 8 in. ;
weight 10 st. |
|
JOHN
NICHOLLS, Inside Left Having already played this
season for the England under-23 side in Italy, Nicholls was capped for
England against Scotland last month as a fitting reward for the brilliant
season he has had. The
understanding he has worked up with Allen has brought them both a prolific
number of goals. His
intelligent positional sense when Allen roams has been a great
contributory factor to the success of this Wolverhampton-born former
centre forward. Height
5 ft. 8 in.; weight 10 st. 7

GEORGE
LEE, Outside Left 'Signed on professional
forms by York City on his seventeenth birthday, Lee arrived at the
Hawthorns by way of Nottingham Forest.
A powerful left-foot shot, he is never afraid to attempt to score
from seemingly impossible angles and distances.
Relies on speed rather than tricks to beat his man, having
developed his pace during his army service, when he won the B.A.O.R. 220
yards and half-mile championships. York-born.
Height 5 ft. 9 in.; weight 10 st. 8 Ib. |
