GORDON
BANKS, Goalkeeper Tallest
(6 ft. Oi in.), and heaviest (13 st. 5 Ib.) player in the side.
Leicester's only full international. Present England
goalkeeper. Cost £4,000 from
Chesterfield four seasons ago. Agile,
magnificent handler, especially of the ball to the far post.
Around Leicester they claim Banks is even safer than the Bank of
England. Born in Sheffield.
Played in the 1961 Cup Final against Spurs. |

JOHN
SJOBERG, Right Back
Despite the Scandinavian surname he
is a Scot, born in Aberdeen. Brilliant
recruit from junior football. Only
established regular place in the side last Boxing Day.
Tenacious tackier, reliable, especially in the air.
Former centre half. Of
Swedish extraction, now qualifying as an accountant. Height 5 ft. II in.,
weight II st. 6 Ib. |

RICHIE
NORMAN, Left Back
Another of the 1961 Final side. Born
in Lemington-on-Tyne, yet another skilful product of the soccer-soaked
North-East. Came from Holden
Colliery in 1958. Made around
160 appearances for Leicester. "Reads

FRANK
McLINTOCK, Right Half
Scottish Under-23 international.
Glasgow-born and signed from the ever-talented Shawfield Juniors
club in 1957. Best example of
attacking wing-half play in England.
In reality an inside-forward in the No. 4 jersey. Height 5 ft. 11
in., weight II st. 4 Ib. Indefatigable worker with a penetrating eye for
setting up lightning attacks. |

IAN
KING, Centre Half Edinburgh-born,
unspectacular, but highly efficient. His crisp distribution is a vital
feature of Leicester's clever, mobile game. Came to Filbert St. in 1956 from Scottish junior football.
Kept his place despite strong opposition from England Under-23
centre half Tony Knapp, later sold to Southampton. Height 5 ft. Iig in-,

COLIN
APPLETON, Left Half (Captain)
Longest-serving player. He joined Leicester from Scarborough in 195,4.
On the fringe of England honours.
A driving, 90-minute skipper; also a careful thinker with a quick
tackle. Completes the same

HOWARD
RILEY, Outside Right
England Under-23 international. A
fast, direct, dangerous winger whose hard, high crosses have created many
golden chances for his fellow forwards this season.
One of only two " locals " in the side.
Signed professional in 1955. Qualified
as a teacher. Height 5 ft. 7

GRAHAM
CROSS, Inside Right
At 19 the " babe " of the side. Popular playing discovery
of the season. A local lad, natural sportsman, now a promising batsman
with Leicestershire. England
Under-23 right half. Plays in
that position mostly, switching fast and fluently with McLintock.
A six-footer who weighs 12 st. 7 Ib.
As fit as any player in the land.
Came into the side regularly only this season. |

KEN
KEYWORTH, Centre Forward
Signed six years ago from Rotherham
for £8,000 as a wing-half. Played inside left in the 1961 Cup Final.
A vastly underrated centre forward and clever ball player.
The side's leading scorer. Notched four Cup goals. A typical
example of the supreme versatility running through the team. A six-footer
who weighs 12 st. 4 Ib. |

DAVIE
GIBSON, Inside Left
Brilliant, bow-legged Scot who cost
£25,000 from Hibernian in January, 1962.
A really talented ball player, accurate forward " general
" of the side, switches play with baffling speed.
Certain to have a long international career with Scotland. Three
Cup goals so far. Modest, likeable young man. Height 5 ft. 7 in., weight
10 st. 10 Ib. |

MIKE
STRINGFELLOW, Outside Left
The second big-money signing by
Leicester who paid Mansfield Town £25,000 for him in the same week as
they purchased Gibson. A tall
(5 ft. II in.) winger who strides all over the field daringly. Headed home
the vital goals against Norwich and Liverpool in earlier rounds.
Leicester will readily pay Mansfield Town a further £2,500 transfer fee
when Mike becomes an England player. |
