Player profiles  out of the Wembley Match Day Programme

RONALD SPRINGETT, Goalkeeper Born at Fulham he had a quick rise to fame with Queen's Park Rangers and cost Wednesday a five figure fee on March 13th, 1958.  Two days later he made his debut and proved to be the man the club had needed to solve a long standing problem. Within 18 months he had gained representative honours and for three and a half years was England's first choice goalkeeper.  He has lost this position since to Banks of Leicester City but Springett has already made over 30 appearances for his country. Height 5ft. 10 in., weight 12 st. 7 Ib.

WILFRED SMITH, Right Back  A Sheffield boy with county football honours when he joined the club on his 15th birthday he will not be 20 until September.  Already his keenness for attack and strong tackling in defence have earned him first team duty as both full back and wing half.  He made his debut in December, 1964 at left half when Gerry Young was injured, had a run of 17 first team games and won a Youth international cap in the process.  Height 5 ft. 10 in., weight II st. 3 Ib.

DON MEGSON, Left Back, Captain  Hails from Sale in Cheshire and was signed as an amateur outside left in October, 1952.  Wednesday tried him as a left winger, in the inside berth, at left half, even at centre half before he finally settled at left back.  He was taken on the professional staff" in June 1953 but not until mid-November, 1959 did he get his chance in the League side.  Since that long awaited first match against Burnley the patient Megson has made some 250 appearances.  Height 5 ft. 9 in., weight 12 st. 7 Ib.

PETER EUSTACE, Right Half  Was born at nearby Stocksbridge in July, 1944 and was spotted playing for Stocksbridge Works by Wednesday who took him on as an apprentice pro. for two years and then full professional in June 1962, a month before his 18th birthday. Made his debut against Leicester City on August 29th, 1962 and last season became the successor to Tom McAneamey who made over 350 appearances.  Height 5 ft.I  in., weight 11st 11 Ib.

VICTOR MOBLEY, Centre Half  Born in Oxford on October 11th, 1943 and played his first football for Oxford City the Isthmian League club.  He turned pro. with Wednesday in August, 1961 getting his first chance in April 1964.  Played in only three matches but immediately showed he could hold his own in top class football.  The life suspension inflicted on former England centre half Peter Swan gave Mobley the opportunity which he took of becoming Wednesday's regular pivot.  He has made several England Under 23 appearances.  Height 6 ft. 0 in., weight 13 st. 8Ib.

GERRY YOUNG, Left Half  A "Geordie" from Jarrow, Young left Tyneside for a distinguished career with Wednesday ten years ago.  Made his League debut in 1956-57 season and at one time looked as if he would make an above average centre forward, doing the hat-trick against Manchester United in March, 1961.  Two years later necessity forced Wednesday into playing him at left half and here Young found his true niche in the game.  He was capped against Wales last season but a bad injury at the end of 1964 put him out of football for several months.  Height 5 ft. 1in., weight II st. 10 Ib.

GRAHAM PUGH, Outside Right  Born at Hoole near Chester on February 12th, 1948 he signed for Wednesday on August 16th, 1963 as an apprentice.  Given a full time contract on his 17th birthday Pugh has deputised recently at outside right for Usher.

JOHN FANTHAM, Inside Forward  Sheffield born and the son of a one time Rotherham United half back, Fantham has made a big reputation as a match winning forward since he first played against Tottenham Hotspur in February, 1958.  A strong, hard thrusting forward, skilful in exploiting the crossfield pass.  His powerful shooting has brought him well over 100 goals in League football and his figures would be better but for ill luck with injuries. Height 5 ft. 7 in., weight II st. 5 Ib.

JIM McCALLIOG, Centre Forward  Made only three appearances for Chelsea last season but grabbed a couple of slickly taken goals and Alan Brown bought him in mid season in an attempt to solve the club's centre forward problem.  He is a Scot from Glasgow and had a brief association as an amateur with Leeds United before moving to Chelsea.  Height 5 ft. 9 in., weight 10 st. 5Ib.

DAVID FORD, Inside Forward  Yet another Sheffielder who was 21 on March 2nd.  Was noticed playing for Sheffield Boys and Yorkshire Grammar Schools XI.  In 1963-64 he made headway in the Central League side and his speed, resource and shooting power has quickly won him a first team spot in the attack.  He made his debut on a pre-season tour but a knee injury received at Bremen on August 11th, 1964 put him out for the whole of last season.   Has made no mistake with his second chance this season and vital goals by Ford have helped Wednesday reach Wembley.  Height 5 ft. 7 in., weight 10 st. 71 Ib.

JOHN QUINN, Outside Left  A native of St. Helens in Lancashire, Quinn was secured from the Lancashire Combination side Prescot Cables on April 29th, 1959.  He made his first team debut against Luton Town the following September.  The following season he played 13 times occupying four positions in doing so.  He did well in Army football being a member of the side that toured the Far East in 1962.  Missed only two matches last season.  Height 5 ft. 6: in., weight 10 st. 1i Ib.
