Programme

GORDON
WEST, Goalkeeper A native of Darfield (near Barnsley),
who started with Blackpool, making his senior debut for them in October
1960, at the age of 17, West signed for Everton—at a then record fee for
a goalkeeper—in March 1962. Including 31 League outings while with
Blackpool, he made his 200th League appearance last November. Has been
capped at Youth and Under-23 level. |
|
TOMMY
WRIGHT, Right Back One of several home-produced
players in Everton's ranks, Wright started as an apprentice, having his
first senior outing in an Inter Cities Fairs Cup game against Valerengen
(Norway) in October 1964, and his League baptism three days later. He
became a regular choice a couple of months later, quickly maturing into a
most consistent player who has never been absent since except when
injured. Was born in Liverpool. |
|
RAY
WILSON, Left Back Started his professional career
with Huddersfield Town in August 1952, after serving on the ground staff,
making his League debut in October 1956. Played in 262 League games for
the Yorkshire club prior to signing for Everton in the summer of IS64,
when Mick Meagan made the journey in the opposite direction in part
exchange. Wilson has played for England in 60 internationals. |
|
HOWARD
KENDALL, Right Half When he played at Wembley
in the 1964 Final against West Ham United, Kendall became the youngest
player ever to figure in a senior Cup Final on this ground. Then with
Preston North End, he was 20 days short of his 18th birthday, but gave a
splendid display, showing no sign of nerves. He had made his League debut
for Preston in May 1963, figuring in 107 League games for the Deepdale
club until his transfer to Everton in March of last year. Gained his first
Under-23 cap last November. |
|
BRIAN
LABONE, Centre Half (Captain) This Liverpool-born
skipper is Everton's longest serving player of the current staff, who gave
up the chance of a University career to sign for them in July 1957. He had
his initial League outing in March 1958, aged 18, and became a regular
first-team choice in the autumn of 1959, playing his 350th League game a
month ago. Has been capped at Under-23 level and in six full
internationals. |
|
COLIN
HARVEY, Left Half Another of Everton's former
juniors and an England Under-23 cap, Harvey's first senior appearance was
against Inter Milan in the European Cup in September 1963, in Milan.
Though he came out of that stiff test with flying colours, it was not
until the end of that winter he made his League debut. The following
season he established himself as a regular first-team choice at inside
forward, switching to the No. 6 shirt at the start of the 1966-67
campaign. |
|
JIMMY
HUSBAND, Outside Right A former apprentice who
hails from Newcastle, Husband joined the Goodison club after leaving
school, and had his first experience in the Football League side in April
1965, against Fulham at Craven Cottage, followed by four outings the
following winter, during which he also played four times for the England
Youth team. Gained England Under-23 caps on the Continental tour last
summer. He has played in three forward berths for Everton this season. |
|
ALAN
BALL, Inside Right First came to prominence with
Blackpool, for whom he played his initial League game—against Liverpool
at Anfield—in August 1962, a few weeks after signing his first
professional form. He figured in 116 League matches for the seaside club
prior to signing for Everton at the start of the 1966-67 campaign, topped
Everton's list of goalscorers last season, and has been scoring
consistently this winter. Has been capped by England in 24 full
internationals, the first of them in May 1965. |
|
JOE
ROYLE, Centre Forward When making his League
debut in January 1966, Royle became the youngest player to figure in
Everton's senior side, being then 16 and nine months. He had one further
League outing that season and four the following winter, but in the
current campaign has established himself as a regular first-team choice,
adding height and weight and strong finishing powers to the front line. He
is particularly good with his head. A native of Liverpool. |
|
ROGER
KENYON, Inside Left Still another of Everton's own
products, who began as an apprentice three years ago, and played regularly
in the reserve side last season at wing half and centre half. Was promoted
to a first-team place as deputy to injured Howard Kendall in December, and
later appeared at left half while Colin Harvey was unfit, earning
considerable praise for his very sound displays. Is a native of Blackpool. |
|
JOHN
MORRISSEY, Outside Left Unlike most of his
Goodison Park colleagues who are natives of Liverpool, Morrissey did not
begin his career at Everton, but with the rival Anfield club, which he
joined upon leaving school. Played his initial League game for Liverpool
ten years ago, having 36 League outings for the Anfielders before signing
for Everton at a very modest fee in August 1962—and gaining a
championship medal in his first season with them, when he was third
highest goalscorer. Started the current season with 101 Everton
appearances in League matches. |
|
ALEX
YOUNG, Substitute One of Everton's most popular players
of recent years. Young, born in Loanhead, was signed from Hearts in
November 1960, while still doing his National Service. A Scottish
international who has played for his country on eight occasions. Young's
career with Everton at the start of this season stood at 72 goals in 203
League games, during which he had filled all the forward positions. Is an
extremely talented ball player, very good with his head despite lack of
inches, and most stylish in all he does. |
