Purpose and the stages of the project life cycle

Given these reasons for project management, some people may feel that this is too fast pace and may not easily accept or change easily. The history and evolution of project management is an interesting one. In the class text, the author organizes the history of project management in three phases: the ad hoc use phase evolving to the formal application phase and finally to the project driven organizations phase. During the ad hoc use phase, a single entity initiated the project management tools with in a given project. Such tools were at that time, networking and/or assignment of responsibilities. Top management ad very little involvement with the implementation of such tools. Sometimes, the tools are ineffective mainly due to lack of coordination between resources and the projects. The second evolving phase is the formal application. In this phase, the Ad Hoc group transforms the organization into a formal matrix (Gray 10). In addition, organizations are becoming aware of barriers like inadequacies or needs to the success of the project. Therefore, they recognize that their management requires training in every management level so that when they are given more control over projects, they can perform at optimal efficiency and effectiveness.
