4. One in fact may never know if one may excel in leadership positions until one is actually in those positions. Although MacDonald clearly had a lot of self-doubt during his initial assignments with the company, he chose not to reveal this and remained solid in his convictions about proper strategy, conduct, and temperament. It was later revealed that his soldiers actually deeply respected him and rewarded his leadership by singing him a meager surprise birthday song.
5. MacDonald showed resolve in following through with his missions at all cost. In one case he was forced to stand fast in position with very difficult odds to enable another company to come around the flank to successfully attack and gain advantage of German positions. He passed a huge test of courage to achieve this, a massive confirmation of his leadership ability. This gave me the understanding that the mission comes first above all else without question, even if one feels the mission is incorrect.
