September had arrived and gone, taking with it the last warmth
of the Summer days. There was a slight chill in the air.
The trees had begun to turn to a more golden colour.
Cobwebs hung upon the trees, glittering with the morning mist.
Glendale Wood was quiet, with the odd birds
chirping high up in the trees,
or the occassional scuffle in the thick bushes,
as the creatures of the wood went about their daily routine.
One particular morning, Charlie the squirrel was collecting
as much food as he could. For Charlie had a good nose,
and he could sence the change of the weather.
He sniffed the chilly air. "Humm, feels like a cold snap coming on."
He mumbled to himself.
On the other side of the pond, Heather the hedghog
had bought her family down for a drink.
"Morning Heather!" Called Charlie
from the opposite side of the pond.
Heather looked up, she could see Charlie busy collecting.
"Morning Charlie". She called back,
then shuddered, as a cold wind blew from the north.
Pickle and Twinkle her little children were so busy drinking,
that they never noticed Charlie.
"Come on you two time to get to work,
there is a cold nip in the air,
we must gather some more twigs to build up our home."
For Heather had not been able to get about
as much as she wanted to, so her little home
underneath the brambles needed some attention.
Pickle and Twinkle rummaged around
to see what they could find.
When all of a sudden Charlie came racing by.
"Hello Charlie." They both called to him.
"Oh there you are, collecting twigs I see."
said Charlie, stopping to chat with them,
he placed the acorns he had collected on the ground.
"That's alot of acorns Charlie." said Twinkle.
"Oh yes, I shall need them, Winter is not over yet,
I feel a cold spell coming on."
Heather looked at charlie with a sadness in her eyes,
charlie noticed, "why heather what ever is the matter?"
Heather sighed..."oh charlie there is so
much to do to my home. It's
almost gone and I am not strong enough to rebuild it.
The children help me, but without Harry to help I am lost."
Charlie tapped heather on her back,
he forgot how prickly she was. "Ouch!"
he shouted making Pickle and Twinkle jump.
"Oh my dear Heather. I had forgot all
about your Harry. We must build a walk way
under that road then no more accidents like that
can happen again." Charlie looked
around the wood, he noticed on the other
side of the pond an old cottage.
It was all in tatters but it
had a roof and windows, it would
give shelter to Heather and her family.
