Living the fast life
“When I first arrived in London, I was amazed by the size and the speed of the city, the wealth, the shops. I felt like a tourist,” says Ruslan, from Dnepropetrovsk. He’s sitting in the middle of the playing fields of Regent’s Park. The Rose of York football team have just taken a half time break. The sun is shining and the other players from Italy, Spain, Japan, Brazil and China are all sitting nearby and chatting in English – the only common language. “Three months later,” Ruslan continues “I feel like I’m a part of the city. My best friends are from Brazil and Japan, and I’ve met people from all over the world.”
Ruslan found the Rose of York Language School website on the internet 6 months ago and enrolled through the application form. “The most surprising thing for me was to find out that I could afford to live and study in London. The prices are really good value, and I have two teachers, both of whom are great. I have a part-time job to pay for the pubs and the nightclubs. Some months I even have enough money to send back home to my family.”
Rose of York Language School has almost 15 years of experience and growth because they do the simple things well. Like teaching English, for example: the school motto “Communication is Learning” extends far beyond the classroom. The teachers help students to understand the way of life in London, the culture of the British, and, most importantly, the language.
“I was really surprised when I found out that the teachers want us to do the talking,” says Ruslan, “They control the lesson, and you learn grammar and vocabulary by communicating. The reception team are also really friendly. Any problem or question I have, I just go down and speak to Jason or Maria and they explain what is best to do.”
Years of experience mean that Rose of York also know how to advise students on visa applications. They know what the Home Office will accept and what won’t work. Students are advised on a course of study depending on how long they plan to stay in the UK.
“If everything goes well, I’m going to take the Cambridge First Certificate exam with the school this year, then the Cambridge Advanced Exam next year, and possibly Business English or IELTS after that. ‘The world’s your oyster’, as they say in English!” Ruslan ran off to join the other players for the second half.
