This section expands the application of the SP CORE values to the way we regard our country. We will first examine the reasons why we are proud or not proud of our own country. (In my case, Singapore). We will also see for ourselves our own level of commitment to our country and discuss the consequences this has on the country.
Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.
John
F. Kennedy
Why do we need to be committed to our country?
So, why do we need to be committed to our country? "Why even
care?" you might ask. If you are someone who thinks that the country's
"business" is none of your business, then you should change that
view quickly. You see, as a citizen of Singapore, we depend on her just as
much as Singapore depend on us. Just spent a moment to think about this. When
Singapore gained its independence in 1965, everyone thought that it would
not work, they believe that Singapore would fall. But now, take a look at
what has become of us. Singapore has grown into a popular and high-technology
city and is well known around the world. Why is this possible? This is because
of the people who were committed to Singapore. It is because of their hard
work that Singapore is able to prosper. Their time and efforts spent in trying
to make Singapore a better place. Now, imagine that none of these people existed.
Everyone in Singapore do not care about her, they do not bother about what
is happening to Singapore. They just mind their own business. What would happen?
Surely Singapore would not have survive in 1965!
As you can see, all of us has a part to play, a role
to fulfill. (As the Rock says, "Know your role." :o) We must
be committed to our own country. Our country has provided so much for us,
and we should pay her back. We are all Singapore Citizens and we should be
proud of that. I'm a Singaporean and I'm damn proud of that!
You see, a country is made up of people, millions
and millions of people, people like you and me. If your country provide you
with a safe environment, stable economy and other good things, don't you think
you should at least pay her back? I know people who said that they would migrate
to other countries when the time is right, I ask myself, why bother? Singapore
is a great place! Low crime rates, no natural disasters, no CHEWING GUMS!
What?! Ha HA. Anyway, even if your country is not that good, we should still
be committed to her. Like what John F. Kennedy said, Ask
not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.
