Club Competition
Current competition standings
Although none of our members are currently active in competitive
yacht racing outside our club, we have a number of members with racing yachts,
mostly IOM, but including RA, Marblehead and 36R yachts.
Club
Competition
We run a competition through the year with the following sailing
instructions:
-
A series of regattas will be held over the year with all
races counting as a single series towards the annual championship.
-
The regattas are governed by the ISAF 'Racing Rules of
Sailing', including Appendix E, these sailing instructions and the notice of
race, if any.
-
Unless otherwise declared by prior notice, the first
race of the day will commence at 10.15 am prompt. The final race will
not commence later than 12.30 pm.
-
Any race lasting more than 30 minutes (i.e. where the winner
has not crossed the finish line within 30 minutes of the start) will be
abandoned.
-
All
races will finish not more than 5 minutes after the winner has crossed the
line regardless of the number of finishers at that stage.
All competitors who have not crossed the finish at this point will be
awarded ‘positions on the water’ by the RO.
-
The RO and all skippers will act as observers and shall call
any contact seen. Where a skipper's boat is involved in a contact they
must immediately declare (loudly please!) a protest, or that they will take
a penalty turn.
-
Any protest hearing will be heard by the RO. Any
skipper may give evidence as an 'observer'. Any skipper found at fault
and who has not taken a penalty turn will be awarded a 'DND'. Any
redress awarded is at the discretion of the RO. The RO's decision is
final.
-
As
several different classes of boat and levels of skipper will be racing, the
starts will be staggered.
The sail secretary at the commencement of the year will allocate
individual competitors a start colour.
The competitor’s start colour may be varied during the course of
the year at the discretion of the Sail Secretary in order to preserve the
balance of the handicaping.
The starting sequence using a pre recorded tape is:
|
|
Time |
| '1 minute warning ' |
0 |
| '30 second warning' |
30 s |
| 'Red Start' |
at 50 s commencing a 10 s countdown to start at 60 s |
| 'Yellow Start' |
at 70 s commencing a 10 s countdown to start at 80 s |
| 'Green Start' |
at 90 s commencing a 10 s countdown to start at 100 s |
| 'All Remainder Start' |
at 110 s commencing a 10 s countdown to start at 120s |
-
Scoring will be by the normal 'low point scoring
system'. Any competitor not available for any race or any regatta will
be scored DNC for that race or series of races. Discards will be
allowed in the normal manner for the total series of races at the year end,
i.e.:
| After 4 races have been completed |
1 discard |
| After 10 races have been completed |
2 discards |
| After 19 races have been completed |
3 discards |
| Then another discard for every further 9 races
completed |
-
Any
competitor who misses a single event will be allocated a score for each race
in that event equal to their average score for all the other races in the
year.
However, if a competitor misses more than one event then they will be
allocated a DNC score for all missed races.
Otherwise, for any race missed during an event the competitor will be
allocated a DNC score.
-
The final result for the championship will be declared at
the club AGM
Current
competition standings
The 2001 Champion was:
Steve Booty
Unfortunately, our 2002 racing season was hit by 'bad' weather, seeing
two events abandoned due to very high winds, and a further two due to no wind at
all. The club committee have therefore reluctantly decided not to award a
championship this year as the number of races actually run were to small to make
this meaningful
Here's hoping for better luck next year
