I am in the process of updating this page
There are so many auction sites on the internet, which do you choose? I'm not going to even attempt to tell you, it's totally up to you. Things you might consider are:
- How many people use the site?
- What kinds of things do they allow you to sell?
- How much do they charge?
- How easy is the site to use?
There are many, many auction sites - I will try to put any I find on the links page as I find them. If you know of any not there, please let me know (I can credit you as having suggested the site if you wish)
You may wonder if there's a best online auction site. The answer is probably not, it's all down to personal preference and the type of items you want to buy/sell.
For example, eBay has many more users than any other and attracts more international buyers
- There are likely to be many more items listed on eBay compared to others so you are more likely to be able to find the item you want. However, due to the greater number of users, you will also have more competition from other bidders
- Due to the listing fees for sellers on eBay, items are more likely to start on a lower price so there is the potential to find a real bargain!
- You will almost certainly find things on other sites that you wouldn't find on eBay, especially items of lesser value, because many others don't charge to list items
- eBay allows sellers from other countries to list items in many countries, so you might find something great from another country without having to check every auction site for every country
- There are considerably more users on eBay than on any other site, which mean that you have more potential bidders to buy your items (assuming that it is something people will want to buy). However, this also means there are more seller on eBay who you may be competing with to sell similar items
- Many sites do not charge to list items in the UK & Ireland, whereas eBay do. This can mean a huge saving and can easily counteract the greater bids you might receive on eBay (depending on the item)
- eBay has a check box to allow you to 'sell internationally'. This means that your item will be listed on eBay's sites in other countries. Anything which might appeal to bidders outside the UK can get much higher prices as a result
- Many of the free sites allow you have your auction automatically resubmit if it doesn't sell, which can mean a much lower workload in re-submitting auctions (eBay will refund your listing fee if you sell the item the second time around, but you will still have to resubmit it yourself)
Before I continue, I must stress that this is my personal opinion and NOT the opinion of any auction site. You may feel differently, that's up to you
Personally, I like to use various sites. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages. The main differences I feel are that many sites are free, whereas eBay is not, which allows you to sell lower priced items and to test items by putting them on for a higher price than you might have done has you had to pay.
However, due to the much greater numbers of users on eBay and the ability of international users to easily view auctions in the UK, some items will sell for much more on eBay, especially items that interest bidders from the USA more than bidders in the UK. eBay occasionally have a 'free-listing day' where they don't charge any listing fees , although they give you very little notice so you can't really save all your auctions for then (and you will still have to pay any other fees such as final value fees )
