French Kicks - "Trial Of The Century"

Seven years ago, French Kicks used to be NYC art-punks Jonathan Fire-Eater (think the Strokes if they'd emerged that crucial five years too early), a group who briefly promised much but faded away after a couple of minor hits and a disappointing album.

Having long since left their garage days behind and now sporting a new suited 'n' booted image, "Trial Of The Century" is actually a surprisingly competent album, taking in elements of '80s stadium rock, new romantic electro and Wire-style art punk and mixing them, for the most part, to oddly good effect with the swooping "Was It A Crime?" being the best example.

Sadly, in a world dominated by gurning morons like Babyshambles it's probably going to sink without trace but there's a few less-than-guilty pleasures to be had from this baby. Party like it's 1983? Aw hell, why not.
