It could possibly be due to Mogwai's descent into hibernation but there seem to have been quite a few bands heading down from north of the border in recent months boasting weird prog-rock tendencies and odd time signatures.
Glasgow's Oceansize are yet another case in point and, as with other bands of this ilk such as Aereogramme, "Music For Nurses", their new mini-album, is a classic case of some good ideas buried under an irritating desire to be obtuse for obtuseness' sake. So for every half-decent skull-crushing riff, they whack on a load of pointless electronica and weird drum patterns which drag it right down into being downright unlistenable.
The bedsitters among you waiting for the new Mogwai album might find some solace here but for now, suffice to say that there's a "Best Of" by the Super Furry Animals (a band who've proved beyond all doubt that you can do sonic experiments and have top drawer tunes as well) out this month which would be a much better use of your hard-earned.
