The '80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster (Leeds Cockpit, 29th October 2004)

Support: Winnebago Deal

It seems somewhat apt that the weekend of All Hallows Eve should be ushered in by arguably Britain's most deranged band here at the Cockpit. But first...

It's good to see Winnebago Deal back in town and sounding better than ever. While before they were trying to drag out a short set (due to lack of written material) by chucking in instrumental jams that could burst your ears from 500 yards, tonight they stick to what they do best, namely good solid three-minute blasts of pure feral white noise speedcore. By the time they finish with a triumphant run through "Manhunt", the Matchbox fans are more than happy to raise the roof for 'em.

It's a telling sign of how confident the '80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster are that they can chuck in arguably their two best known songs "Psychosis Safari" and "Celebrate Your Mother" so early on in the set and still get away with it. Tonight is a superbly vicious set in near-sauna conditions due to the venue being so packed. Already reading like a greatest hits set despite the group only being on their second album, tonight's set is old favourites ("Chicken", "Giant Bones", "Morning Has Broken") and psychobilly anthems in waiting ("I Could Be An Angle", "Rise Of The Eagles") mixed to awesome effect while throwing themselves round the stage like human stock cars. Overall verdict - just watch these buggers fly.
