American Hi-Fi (Leeds Rocket, 7th April 2003)

Quite honestly, it's a bit of a surprise to find out that American Hi-Fi are still going. Having made a minor splash a couple of years back with their "Flavour Of The Weak" single, they promptly disappeared off our radars. Two years on and, in a climate where skate-punk appears to be very much on the way out, things don't look good for them.

AHF's main problem, if tonight's show is anything to go by, is that they just don't have the charisma of a lot of the other bands of this genre. As loathsome as Blink 182 and Alien Ant Farm are, at least they've usually got enough bad jokes and toilet humour to keep the crowd entertained and just about make up for their shortcomings. AHF though come across as four well-scrubbed preppy college kids and, added to the fact that their music is effectively Green Day minus the attitude, sees them sink like a stone tonight with hardly any of the tunes eliciting even the vaguest of interest.

Sorry lads but it looks like your time is up. Don't call us, we'll call you.
