Antiproduct (Bradford Penningtons, 22nd May 2003)

Support: David R Black

Three songs into Antiproduct's set and lead singer Alex Kane, who looks like a technicolour cross between Gene Simmons and Krusty the Clown, is perched atop the bar trying to organise a mass singalong with the people who've decided not to wander into the moshpit and trying to persuade members of the audience to join him up there.

Well, let's face it, you don't get this at a Stereophonics gig.

Rewind an hour or so and support group David R Black who look like the Music slimmed down to a three-piece with a gothy version of Lauren Laverne on bass and sound like early Placebo (not as bad a thing as you might think) get a decent reception from the hundred or so hardy souls gathered here tonight. What they lack in image they make up for in decent pop-punk tunes and, given a bit of record label backing, they may go far.

Certainly though, nothing could prepare you for the full-on musical onslaught of Antiproduct. Comprising of Kane, a trio of seemingly genetically-created Amazonian rock goddesses and a bloke on drums at the back, they crash through an hour's worth of brilliant Andrew WK/Kiss-style glam metal like "Hey Let's Get It On!", "Turnin' Me On", "If I Was Orson Welles" and "Bungee Jumping People Die!". In between we get at least four organised audience singalongs, two fifteen-second bursts of speed metal with the three girls on vocals and about six hundred flashed devil signs. It's all brilliantly silly and brilliant fun. Quite simply, Antiproduct tonight confirmed themselves as one of the best up-and-coming live bands on the rock circuit today. I suggest you go check them out now before they realise those stadium rock dreams and leave the small venues behind. Because believe you me, on tonight's evidence, it's only a matter of time...
