Back when we started hyping the Cooper Temple Clause a couple of years back, we could never have guessed they'd hit as big as they did. Tonight's gig is rammed with the group's legions of fans come for an hour with their heroes.
First though, Medium 21 who at least manage to put an average debut album behind them with an uncharacteristically fierce live performance, crashing through songs like "Plans Aren't Enough" and "Daybreak vs Pride" with the sort of enthusiasm that's sadly lacking on a lot of their recorded work.
Better still are the Rain Band. If you've seen our live review a couple of months back then you'll know all about them but suffice to say that this lot take an inspiring brew of Roses-style psychedelia and Mary Chain brooding and mix it to perfection. They have a song called "The World Is Ours" and it may well be quite prophetic.
But no-one was going to topple the Cooper Temple Clause for sheer excitement tonight. Back from recording a second album of which we see a few glimpses in the newer stuff which shows a more tuneful direction than the wilfully vicious soundscapes of their first album "See This Through And Leave". However, it's the oldies which get the fans going with "Devil Walks In The Sand", "Who Needs Enemies?", "Film Maker" and "Training Dogs" all inspiring mass shoutalongs from the assembled CTC Army (sounds surreal? Believe you me, it was). By the time they finish with "Panzer Attack" which sees bassist Didz perched atop the speaker stack screaming at the crowd through his megaphone, you've had all the convincing you need that this band are on the verge of going stellar. Don't panic readers, if you've been looking for the band to boot Coldplay's miserable little arses out the door, they've just come back.
