By rights, the Cosmic Rough Riders really have no right at all to be this good. Watching them is something of a guilty pleasure. I mean...quiet guys with acoustic guitars singing love songs...load of crap, right?
Wrong. Cosmic Rough Riders are that most rare of quantities in this field - a band who can write great songs that tug at your heart-strings without sounding whiny. Like their spiritual forebears Teenage Fanclub, they deserve nothing but greatness. Groups like Coldplay and the Polyphonic Spree would kill to have written songs as beautiful as "Melanie" and "The Pain Inside". And probably to have a singer who doesn't sound as if he can only communicate in whalespeak as well.
It's fair to say that the new album will offer pretty much more of what we got on 2001's "Enjoy The Melodic Sunshine" if the new songs on offer tonight are anything to go by (current single "Because You" being the pick) but why would you mess with a winning formula when the songs are this good?
If last night's Libertines gig was a trip to exactly how poor music can sound when certain morons get their hands on it, tonight was a truly soul-cleansing experience. Do yourselves a favour and make this band the megastars they deserve to be.
