"Underneath the moon and stars, the freaks come out to play..." sang someone once. Whoever it was, they'd have appreciated tonight.
Kicking proceedings off, Leeds native Robochrist is a one-man techno-rock terrorism army (think Atari Teenage Riot with a sense of humour). Armed with his guitar and a range of sound effects which takes in everything from "Rainbow" to Simon Cowell via Aswad, "Count Duckula", "Grange Hill" and countless others too many to mention, the guy is an absolute bona fide star and will be going on to much bigger things if there's any justice.
Meanwhile, Electric Eel Shock continue the long line of slightly insane Japanese punk bands to make minor waves over here with a ferociously vicious set of razorblade punk which cuts through the air like a samurai sword. Again, a band who are hopefully on their way to bigger things.
But no-one was gonna steal Danko Jones' thunder tonight. Now on their third album, these Canadian soul-rockers are frankly a "testify brother!" experience of gargantuan proportions. Rocking tighter than a camel's arse in a sandstorm, they blast in with "We Sweat Blood" (the title track of the new album) and crash through an absolutely brilliant one-hour set, getting the best reception I think I've ever seen from any band playing the small room in the Cockpit. From the none-more-sleazy "White Cadillac" to the furious "Devil's Child", this is garage rock the way it's meant to be. Really, global superstardom isn't enough to do this guy justice - hopefully very soon the world will start to take notice.
