Electric Soft Parade (Leeds Cockpit, 1st November 2003)

Support: Clearlake

This review may not scan very well I'm afraid. To put things into perspective, today I have been all the way down to Nottingham and back with a raging hangover brought on from a Halloween house party the night before and seen my team lose at the football down there to boot.

So by the time I enter the Rocket at 7:45 on Saturday night, my head feels just a bit numb to put it mildly. Still, at least Clearlake are hardly going to be the sort of band to make my headache even worse. Still sounding to all intents and purposes like a house-trained British Sea Power they keep the crowd happy with tunes like "Winterlight" and "Something To Look Forward To" for half an hour or so.

Although the start of headliners Electric Soft Parade's set is beset by technical demons they too recover well to put on a good show with tunes like "Empty At The End", "Biting The Soles Of My Feet", excellent new single "Things I've Done Before" and the epic "American Adventure" (which could almost be the Boo Radleys in their prime) this is proof that whoever said this lot were the last of a dying breed of electro-indie bands was obviously very wrong. The only complaint is that a couple of the more anonymous songs tend to drag for a bit while the version of the sublime "Silent To The Dark" that they do tonight is a bit short (considering the last time I saw 'em live they stretched it out to over 15 minutes). But still, minor gripes for what was essentially a very good gig.

So what did I do next? Yup, you guessed it, went and got completely wasted all over again. Ow, my head...
