Her Alibi (Leeds Joseph's Well, 16th December 2003)

So we got to Joseph's Well at about 7:30 and noticed the tickets for the B-Movie Heroes gig that night were only £3 on the door. Bit strange given that it cost four quid to get them in advance. Asked the guy on the door and it turns out they never showed up. D'oh.

So you're getting a review of the band who were supporting them, Her Alibi, instead. Actually, there were three bands on tonight but the other two were just so dire, so uninspired, so identikit that I can't be bothered giving 'em any publicity. You know the sort of thing - vocals that veer between poor man's Mike Patton style crooning and Satan's hellhound style shouting, guitarist and bass player who desperately want to be John Frusciante and Flea respectively only with about a tenth of the talent, yawnsome sub-Korn/Nirvana "no mummy I won't tidy up my room" teenage angst. Sorry lads. Been there, done that, wasn't massively impressed by it first time round.

Her Alibi though are different. Steel through the dope haze if you like. Look, trust me on this one, in my capacity as a reviewer and co-runner of a promotions company, I get to quite a few gigs of this description in the course of looking for decent new groups round here and putting this webzine together but these guys are definitely one of the better ones in Leeds today and it's a pity that their set was only witnessed tonight by about 15 onlookers, three of whom were probably too drunk to realise which band they were watching. Taking the precision riffing of the better early '90s emo-core groups like Helmet and Kerbdog and mixing it with the taut angst of the Smashing Pumpkins or "Swim"/"Polythene" era Feeder, it makes tracks like "Ready To Burn" and the excellent "Xenophobe" pure granite-heavy chunks of riffosity which mark them out as a serious cut above many of the hopefuls doing the rounds on the Leeds circuit at the moment.

More on these guys as and when we get it but don't bet against hearing a lot more from them in 2004.
